As we reach the holidays we are reminded of what makes them so special. Everyone has their own tradition that is unique to them. Whether that be decorating the tree or sipping hot cocoa, no tradition should go without recognition.
One of the most well-known and cherished traditions for Christmas is secret santa. This fun game can be played with friends, family, teammates, and more. Players draw names to select who they will buy a gift for, and have an exchange of all the gifts. Senior Abby Tupa said that she enjoys Secret Santa, "with my cousins on my dad's side because we've been doing it forever." Secret Santa keeps costs down and allows individuals to personalize their gifts.
Christmas cookies are a delicious holiday tradition. From sugar cookies, to gingerbread men, there is a christmas cookie for everyone. Senior Ben Minnick said, "I enjoy baking cookies with my family." There are hundreds of cookie recipes out there to choose from. Senior Lauren Collins said, "Chocolate chip cookies are good." Cookie decorating parties are also a fun way to spend the holidays. All you need is some cookie dough and a couple of friends.
What do The Grinch, Rudolph, and Frosty the Snowman all have in common? They are all famous Christmas movies. Watching holiday movies is a popular tradition, and there are countless options to choose from. Senior Elia Bronson said, "Me and my siblings watch Christmas movies before we go to bed every Christmas Eve." Elf, which was released in 2003, is one of many great movies to choose from. Sophomore Julia Stojov said, "Home Alone is my favorite because it's a classic." There are plenty of movies that even the whole family can enjoy like, A Charlie Brown Christmas or White Christmas. Movies like these are sure to bring the Christmas spirit.
Of course, arguably the most cherished holiday activity of all is seeing family, friends, and loved ones. Senior Josie Legakis said that she loves "seeing my family that I usually don't get to see." The holidays have always been a great time to gather. Senior Tiffani Cox said, "I love when my family gets together." This is a favorite holiday activity for many people because it springs the opportunity to see relatives that may live far away or that they may not see as often as they would like. Senior Charlie O'Connell said, "My favorite part is seeing my cousins and the people who come back from college. We go to Kalamazoo to see all the family I don't get to see often." Gathering with family is always a memorable experience, and the holidays make it more special.
Holiday traditions bring loved ones together, and they are great ways to share memories and spread joy. Traditions like skiing, ice skating, and hanging stockings really initiate the Christmas vibe. There is never a wrong time to start a new tradition—so, this year, make it a goal to start something new this holiday.
