As winter wraps its icy fingers around South Lyon, students find themselves drawn to a variety of activities that bring warmth into their hearts and joy to their frosty days. From snow-covered landscapes to cozy indoor retreats, the winter season offers students a diverse range of opportunities to engage in their favorite cold-weather pastimes. Explore the top winter activities that students eagerly anticipate as the temperature drops.
For many, winter brings the highly-anticipated return of snow scenery. One of the timeless traditions that never fails to captivate students is engaging in friendly snowball fights. "I remember building snowmen and having snowball fights with my cousin and my sister all the time when I was little and having so much fun," junior Riley Chapuseaux said. Neighborhoods around South Lyon transform into battlefields of laughter and excitement as students build forts and launch snow projectiles at each other. South Lyons cheer does not stop there, they introduce their annual holiday spectacular. Every year on the first Saturday of December citizens in the community come together to offer support to low-income families who struggle around the holiday time; they also support local charities.
Simultaneously, the creation of snowmen becomes an art form. From classic three-ball snowmen with carrot noses and button eyes to imaginative and quirky sculptures, students partake in transforming the blank canvas of a snowy yard into a gallery of frosty characters.
Winter sports take center stage during the colder months, such as basketball, winter guard, unified hockey, unified snowboarding, and indoor track. Each of these sports provides students with thrilling outdoor and indoor activities. Senior basketball captain Ben Radley said, "I enjoy being on the team because of the bonds that I am making and continuing to grow, I also like to compete and get in the other team's head." They do not allow the cool breeze to stop them from doing what they truly enjoy. "I like being on my own team and not worrying about anyone else besides myself. That's why I run indoor track," senior Jack Courval said. Show your support for South Lyon but attend these winter sports events. The adrenaline rush of skiing and snowboarding down snowy slopes is enjoyed to many students. Mount Brighton is a destination for students to visit during the cold months. "I really like to snowboard. It's an enjoyable way to get outside during the winter and hang out with your friends while also learning a new skill," senior Gabe Robbins said. Winter sports offer a perfect blend of excitement and exercise. Snowboarding and skiing sessions become popular social events, fostering a sense of camaraderie among students.
