We were looking for an affordable restaurant with a wide variety on the menu for a department gathering when we found 5 Senses Bistro
Located at Star Vista, 5 Senses is a no-frills casual cafeteria serving affordable set lunches and al la carte Western meals. The entire space is not very big so it is advisable to make any booking in advance. There is an office crowd during lunch due to their set lunches
Their pasta and risotto are less than SGD 20 while the meats are in the mid-20s price range. Each main comes with a choice of 2 sides. The lunch is set at SGD 19.90, with the selection of 1 starter, 1 main, and 1 drink. Some starters and mains have additional top-up costs like seafood and beef
Some of the starters we ordered were the mushroom cream soup, seared scallops and smoked duck salad. There was a top-up of SGD 9 for the scallops and it took them quite some time to serve. The mushroom soup was creamy and decent but nothing too outstanding whereas the duck salad was served on mixed vegetables and drizzled with olive oil and dressing. The greens helped to balance out the saltiness of the smoked duck so the overall dish is a good starter. The scallops took some time to arrive and there were only 2 pieces served with a light citrusy sauce. The scallops were lightly seared with a golden crust and a tender centre. There was nothing too terrible or outstanding about the scallops
For the mains, the 2 fish dishes were served the fastest whereas the steak and pasta took some time. The salmon was pan-fried very well with a crispy crust but it was slightly dry as there was no sauce given except the mayonnaise. The grilled fish had a nice charred flavour while the inside remained succulent but the pepper sauce kind of overpowered the fish flavour. The steak was quite normal according to my colleague. The sides were generally ok except for the broccoli which was quite mushy. The last dish served was crab pasta in a cute crab design container and when you open the head of the crab, you can see the pasta packed full of seafood ingredients like prawns, crab meat, mussels and clams. The gravy used for the pasta resembles prawn or seafood bisque as it was deeply seafood flavoured with a semi-thick consistency
Overall, if you are looking to spend less than SGD20 for a meal with general standard Western dishes, 5 Senses is a place you can visit. I can imagine this place being popular with schoolchildren or young working adults
