Debuting many years ago with the Janome MC11000, Janome introduced us to a fast, new and exciting way to quilt our projects without the need for a dedicated, and more expensive, longarm quilting machine. AcuFil Quilting combines quilting and embroidery as the stitching is done in the embroidery hoop. How cool is that?!
Later machines like the Janome MC12000 had a separate AcuFil Quilting Kit available: Part Number 862412005 which you may be lucky enough to still find at your Janome dealer.
For those with the Janome MC450E, MC500E, MC550E and new MC550ELE, you're definitely in luck as there's a Janome AcuFil Quilting Kit Part Number: 864435000 for those machines, as well!
A special, different style of embroidery hoop is included in the kit. Unlike traditional embroidery hoops which have an outer and inner hoop, the special Janome AcuFil Quilting hoop has a hard, clear acrylic gridded template which replaces the usual inner hoop. This is useful to help press down the batting as you position your fabric layers in the hoop. As well, part of the secret to the speed and accuracy of AcuFil Quilting is using printed paper templates to position the design so it's in just the right spot on the fabric as we hoop. I use green painter's tape to temporarily affix the paper templates to the hard acrylic template.
The outer hoop has large magnetic strips over which you'll attach large, powerful magnets which holds your fabric in place. Once the fabric is secured with the magnets, remove the hard acrylic template and you're ready to stitch!
It's a very slick system which allows you to quilt your projects, regardless of size, faster and easier than ever. When it's time to reposition the fabric, simply remove the magnets and slide the fabric whenever you'd like to quilt next. No need to remove the hoop from the machine. This really helps speed up the process.
Watch this little video of AcuFil Quilting on my fabulous Janome MC15000, which came with AcuFil Quilting as part of the Horizon Link Suite software included with the machine.
To learn more about the Janome AcuFil Quilting way of quilting, check out the many videos on the Janome America You Tube channel. Though the demonstrations are often done on the Janome MC15000 and Janome MC12000, the process; the steps of AcuFil Quilting are the same regardless of the machine.
There's also many previous blogs on Janome Life to review. Use the SEARCH box to type AcuFil Quilting to pull up all related posts.
Think outside the box and use AcuFil Quilting to quilt fabric which you then cut up and sew into a garment. You can make your own quilted fabric for garments, tote bags, Home Dec projects, whatever your imagination can create!
Happy Quilting!
