Have you ever had the dilemma of trying to use an extra large spool or cone of thread on your machine, only to find it's too big for the spool pin and it flies off? At one point, you might have even tried the coffee cup hack; putting the spool or cone of thread in a coffee cup placed at the back of the machine.

Oscillating Hook is the technical mechanical term for machines which have a front loading bobbin with a separate metal bobbin case, like the Janome 1522, which comes in many colours, including the gorgeous red, Janome 1522RD, below.
These 5mm machines also have vertical spool pins at the back right. Some, like the Janome 1522 and Janome Purple Majesty pictured below have retractable spool pins.

Others, like the Janome HD1000 BE, which also comes in white, Janome HD1000, have fixed vertical spool pins.
Regardless which type of spool pin your Oscillating Hook machine has, you'll use these to help secure the spool stand at the back of the machine. This Janome Public Service Announcement shares all the details!
The high retractable thread mast allows more room for finicky threads, like monofilament and metallic threads, to uncurl and relax before they pass through the tensions of the machine. This will greatly improve your results as you'll experience much less thread breakage and consistent stitches.
Even the tall Madeira AeroQuilt thread cones, which we typically use on the Janome Quilt Maker longarm quilting machines work beautifully on the small domestic sewing machines by using the new Janome 2 Spool Stand for Oscillating Hook machines. Bigger cones and spools of thread are generally more economical, too, so the spool stands really do pay for themselves over time.
