Bucolic Scene, Kiawah Island
"Something in nature says, 'Come and take my photograph. So I do."
Minor White7
Last week many of us responded to Egidio's challenge by focusing on places where we have fun, which led me to think about all of the fun places in my personal "neighborhood" here on Kiawah Island. So this week I'm asking you to share YOUR neighborhood with the rest of us. I've opened above with a nearby scene which I pass most every day on my walk to the beach. I've featured it in the past but this image, as well the others in today's post, are from this week as I purposely set out to share my personal surroundings with you.
With two exceptions at the end, all were captured on my walk to and from our beach. The second place I pass is one of Kiawah's 7 golf courses. Its name is Cougar Point, so-called for the wild animals that once roamed the island. Of course I had to use an image that featured one of the alligators commonly found here. Note that the golfers are paying absolutely no attention to the little guy!
Oblivious
"Photography is like golf, you never master it, but you can always get better."

Next I pass one of several swimming pools, this one designed around the many families with children who visit during the summer months. You'll note there are no swimmers in the images. Here on Kiawah it's almost as if a switch is thrown the day after Labor Day and all of our visitors (along with their children) leave the island to head back to real life.
Season's End
"Leaves are verbs that conjugate the seasons."
Gretel Ehrlich
My next stop captures some of the always-lovely flowers that change with the seasons. Here on Kiawah our weather is still warm but not quite as humid as on a typical summer's day. There are still blossoms a-plenty, with the addition of butterflies savoring their nectar. No doubt some among our followers will be able to name these plants for us 😊
Summer Bounty
"We do not find it hard to accept the beauty of a flower for itself alone."
Paul Outerbridge
After crossing a small street, I head through a sandy parking lot and arrive at our entry (shown below) to the beach. While golfers see us as a mecca for the game, most think of our beach as their primary destination - at least in season. Often while dad is off playing 18 holes, mom is on the beach with the kids. During off-season golf still draws visitors but residents "take back the beach" from summer's tourists.
Getting Close
"Perhaps God bestows the gift of art upon those who cannot reach Him using the more conventional paths."
Dominic Rouse
One never knows what one will find on the beach. This week I came upon the scene below, perfect for this week's challenge. Interestingly their backs were to the ocean but I didn't want to invade their space by shooting them from the front. They are actually directly beyond my local beach entrance.
Mother and Daughter
"Nature is a great artist, the greatest....You can't beat Mother Nature."
Brett Weston
As I walk the beach to the east from my entry point I typically exit at a facility called The Sandcastle. It houses a residents-only pool as well as meeting rooms for our various clubs and associations, and an exercise facility. During the summer months there would not be a single empty chair. The second-story back porch is a popular spot for people-watching and ocean views.
Sandcastle Facility
"I love photography. I love taking photographs. I love looking at photographs. And, some of my best friends are photographers."
Arthur Meyerson
From the beach, after passing the Sandcastle I take a different route home, making a big virtual circle. As I get closer I have the option for the shade of the bicycle path (which runs the entire length of the island), or the sunshine of the golf course and our street. For purposes of illustration and variety, I chose the bike path for my photo shoot.
Ticket To Ride
"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving."
Albert Einstein
I'll close with two images from a nearby Kiawah facility to which I can bike in 15 minutes or drive in 5. The first is one of our popular new pickleball courts and the second is a view of one of the large ponds that are spread throughout the island.
Pickleball in Process
"You've got to be able to hit the ball hard. Nobody plays golf to putt."
Joel Pritchard
Peace and Quiet
"Whether in a moment of peace and quiet or exhilarating excitement, savor every minute of every place."
Lorrie Morgan
I loved the Lorrie Morgan quote above. Life is short and filled with all kinds of moments. It is up to us to savor them all, whether from a quiet resort community, a suburban neighborhood filled with the sounds of children at play, a bustling cityscape or anything in between. Help us to understand your world a little better by sharing it with us in response to this week's challenge. Be sure to link to my post and to use the Lens-Artists Tag to help us find you.
Finally, we offer our thanks to Egidio and all of those who responded to his Fun challenge last week. It was indeed tons of fun building our own responses as well as seeing yours. Finally we hope you'll join us next week when Patti once again leads us on her beautiful Pilotfish site. Until then as always please stay safe, be kind and enjoy the adventure.
