Be Still . . .
Devotionals for Daily Living ©
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
(Matthew 5:4 (NIV))
Does your heart break for what breaks the heart of God?
Do you understand that the Lord is heartbroken when we mourn? In order to understand this, all that you need to do is look at Lazarus. Mary and Martha mourned and we see Jesus' response in two words.
Jesus wept.
(John 11:35 (NIV))
Now, let's expand this a bit. Do you mourn for the state of the world and for all those who do not know the Lord, or do you only mourn for your immediate circle of family and friends?
How do you think that the Lord is reacting to the events of this sinful, fallen world? Think about that question and then think about a passage that we all know.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
(John 3:16 (NIV))
His heart was broken because His beloved creation had fallen for the lies of the enemy, so He came up with a plan for our redemption.
He still mourns for those who have not accepted grace and mercy, yet, He rejoices over those who have. Which side do you fall on?
We have a God who knows what it is to mourn, for He has lived as one of us. He has experienced everything that we can experience. He knows what it is like to rejoice. He knows what it is like to mourn. He knows the full range of human emotion and He still embraces us in the midst of all of our pain and all of our sin. He is our strong tower. He is our shelter. He is our hiding place, and He is our salvation.
He is our refuge when we mourn.
Have you found the comfort that He offers?
