I miss flowers
through the long months
of winter
when the world
is drained of color
and all I see
is gray
or snow
that turns
grimy black
I miss the reds
yellows
blues
pinks
whites
and green
I miss the birds
the leafy trees
the bees
the long days
and the hot SUN
I've probably been living
in the wrong place
my entire life
but I love Chicago
so I stay
and try to accept
the weather
that drives other people away
the darkness
is already pushing my buttons
sometimes
I feel like standing outside
and yelling toward the sky
NO
NOT YET
but winter
who always seems to be
waiting in the wings
would just laugh
as snow flakes
fell around him
and tears of glee
ran down his cold blue face
his words floating toward me
on a cool breeze
I'll see you soon
so instead
I turn on all the lights
and water my plants
