...while the sun shines. Time for a Samba killer
We have been waiting for retro kicks that are not the Adidas Sambas, and we think we have found a pair. Asics, the Japanese brand that's truly picking up pace even if it is not quite trending here, has collaborated with the Danish furniture company Hay (now majority-owned by Herman Miller) for what is the latter's first co-branded sneakers in the form of an archival style that is the Skyhand OG. This pairing yields a simple silhouette and a colour story that won't be out of place in the pages of Cereal. More importantly, for those us looking for a pair of sneakers without fancy mid-soles and over-complicated overlays, the Skyhand OG is it, and, without doubt, the shoe to take over the Samba's too-long reign.
Many of us have presently not quite parted ways with the mesh upper trend, but sometimes when you want kicks that do not look like running shoes, you would have to go beyond the painfully trendy (including, regrettably, Asics's own Wave Rider 10!). Apart from looking like a sensible shoe for the pavement, the Skyhand OG is not a screamer and does not pretend to be. With Hay's touch—the colour, 'chambray blue' especially (top)—the sneakers are, at least for now, not the shoe of summer, and not off-duty-model-approved. To augment its sportswear cred, Asics improved the comfort factor of the Skyhand OG with their signature FlyteFoam in the forefoot and Eva foam in the heel. The upper is made of suede, with leather overlays and details. Smart is not overstating it.
