I had cravings for Japanese pork cutlet when I walked past Tonkatsu Ma Maison in Tiong Bahru and decided to give it a try
Located on the external extension with new dining establishments, Tonkatsu Ma Maison is visible to all people walking past or driving past the shopping mall. With over 41 years in the business now, Ma Maison has expanded by having 33 branches of its Ma Maison Restaurant in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand
The restaurant is mid-size with enough tables to sit 50 to 60 people at any one time. The furnishings are simple with some elements of Japanese design used on their walls and lightboxes. They also used cute pig lanterns as their lights for the area in addition to other spotlights so the whole restaurant is covered in warm and cosy lighting
There are different sauces provided for the tonkatsu meal; sweet sauce, sweet sauce with spicy flavour, soy sauce, sesame sauce and salt and ground sesame
All the meat served at Tonkatsu Ma Maison is aged and flavoured with natural salt and fried in light vegetable oil. The rice served is authentic Japanese imported rice and during dinner, the rice is served in a mini Kamado. The Kamado is a traditional Japanese rice cooker which keeps the rice hot and steaming throughout the meal. You can also choose between white rice and multigrain rice. As with all Tonkatsu restaurants, you get 2 choices of meat, from pork loin to pork fillet which has different textures. For those who do not wish to eat pork, there are also seafood options like oyster, fish, chicken and prawn katsu sets.
The loin was a fattier cut with a strip of fat providing a juicy bit into the katsu whereas the fillet was a lean and tender cut which is slightly tougher to bite. Both katsu were nicely fried with a light batter and juicy meat. I prefer the spicy sauce with a nice kick to cut away the grease and the sesame salad sauce paired well with the sliced cabbage
It was a satisfactory tonkatsu meal at Ma Maison with prompt, good service and a good variety on their menu. The price is also reasonable for a Japanese Tonkatsu meal
