Gaza has been devastated by continuous Israeli atrocities since October 7, 2023. One can find rubbles everywhere in the Gaza Strip. Apart from killing innocent people, the Israeli Forces have destroyed hospitals, health centres, colleges and schools there. The Human Rights Department of the UN has mentioned in its latest report that more than 76% of schools have been virtually wiped out in Gaza. They should be rebuilt as soon as possible. Human Rights activists, too, are of the opinion that Israel plans to completely destroy Gaza. Hence, the Zionist Regime has targeted educational institutions and hospitals. It has also destroyed food grains and emergency shelters.
Since May 2024, satellite images have shown increasing Israeli attacks on Palestinian schools as the war has intensified. In particular, the Israeli Forces have destroyed schools in those areas where residents were ordered to evacuate prior to the attack. It is mainly because the majority of people took refuge in school buildings to save their lives. As per a survey, 69% of those schools have been directly attacked by the Israeli Forces, while 96% are partially damaged!
A UNICEF study published in April 2024 revealed that Israel completely destroyed eight out of 10 schools in the Gaza Strip! The Israeli attacks have claimed lives of many teachers, apart from forcing at least 620,000 students to leave schools. Gaza's education system had already been shaken by the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict since 2008. Now, it is completely destroyed. Colleges and universities, too, are in a sad state. Israa University, located south of Gaza City, has been reduced to rubble! A video on the destruction of Israa University went viral on social media in January 2024.
According to academics, the prolonged Israel-Hamas War has rocked the entire education system in Gaza. Also, the Palestinian children and teenagers in war-torn Gaza have become desolate, homeless! The Palestinians badly require foreign aid to overcome this trauma.
(The Wire) Palestine has requested Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call for "an immediate ceasefire" and take a "resolute stance" against the atrocities being perpetrated in Gaza.
In a congratulatory message sent to the Indian PM on taking over as third term, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa wrote that "as a global leader and a nation that values Human Rights and Peace, India holds a significant role in bringing an end to the genocide in Gaza". He called for "India to utilise all diplomatic channels to call for an immediate ceasefire, increase humanitarian aid to Gaza to help alleviate the suffering, collaborate with the International Community to ensure the protection and safety of Palestinian civilians, and take a resolute stance against the atrocities being perpetrated".
The letter dated June 12, 2024 also mentioned that Palestine appreciated India's "steadfast support and solidarity" towards the Palestinian Cause and the Rights of the Palestinian people.
On October 7, 2024, the Palestinian Hamas Movement launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the capture of over 250 hostages who were taken into Gaza.
