With the help of Balenciaga, of course

Silver is the stunner, Michelle Yeoh probably thought. She is into metallics these days. At the Balenciaga Cruise 25 show in Shanghai yesterday, she wore a silver chain mail gown with a draped cowl neckline. This seemed like a remedial follow-up to the silver foil dress she wore to this year's Met Gala, four Mondays ago, that was generally panned. And, joked about. This time, curiously, the dress was more in line with what the house of Versace might offer than a creation evocative of Balenciaga. There is nothing inherently off about the gown, but how it looks on the wearer seemed to boggle the mind. As one Michelle Yeo fan texted us from across the Causeway, "能把它穿丑也是一种能力"—being able to wear it in such an ugly manner is also a skill. "Ugly" is perhaps too severe. But that it is unappealing even to admirers is perhaps unfortunate. An SOTD reader said to us, when we showed him the photo, "Oh, quite trans-y, hor?" Another was more succinct: "dragster!"
We understand that Ms Yeoh is not a model although she models intermittently throughout her acting career. And it is possible that under that umbrella held a tad too high, it was hard to look your couture best. But the mannish pose was indeed curious. It didn't help that her new, long bob looked like a wig, and one that might be worn on RuPaul's Drag Race by Asian contestants, such as Jujubee. According to Ms Yeoh, Mr Gvasalia has total control over how she looks when in Balenciaga (as he does with Kim Kardashian), even the hair. As she told People after the Met Gala, "working with Demna, it's the whole [look]. It's not just a dress. It's the jewelry, it's the hair, it's the makeup." And it's amazing that she allowed herself to be dictated, self-expression so restrained. With regards to the dress for the Shanghai show, she told Vogue that it was her "couture armour". How timely. For Balenciaga.
