Synopsis:
The New York Times bestselling author of Almost There delivers the start of a new rom-com series with an enemies-to-lovers romance, perfect for readers of Abby Jimenez and Jasmine Guillory.
Ashanti Wright is ecstatic over the success of her dog boarding business, Barkingham Palace. In fact, it has become so successful that Ashanti has plans to expand her empire with a doggie bake shop. There's just one problem, the building she's had her eye on has just been sold to the surly grandson of one of her favorite customers.
Thaddeus Sims is not a dog person. He's barely a person's person. But when his grandmother is transferred to a senior living facility that doesn't accept pets, the former army officer agrees to care for her annoying Standard Poodle, Puddin'. After all, it was with his grandmother's help that Thad was able to buy the building that will soon house The PX, a sports bar/all-around hangout space for former servicemen that he plans to open.
Puddin' and Ashanti's French Bulldog, Duchess, have become a bit of a sensation on Barkingham Palace's livestream because of their budding romance. When a video of the dogs sharing a doggy treat Lady and the Tramp-style goes viral, their owners are sucked into a media frenzy that captures the nation by storm...and creates some sparks for their owners too.
My Review:
Ashanti runs a dog boarding business, Barkingham Palace, and a retired veteran who is appeasing his grandma's wish of taking in her beloved dog, Puddin', meet and push each other's buttons. When their dogs Duchess and Puddin' go viral, they are forced to spend time together. Their dogs are in love and that seems to be rubbing off onto them because while they were ready to bite each other's heads off, they now can't imagine spending time apart. A charming read for dog lovers and readers who enjoy grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, black love representation, and an unexpected love story.
Ashanti owns Barkingham Palace and every dog that stays there is treated like royalty. She started her business from the ground up and is also a mom to her twin sisters. It is tough dealing with teenagers, especially after the loss of their parents, but she is doing the best she can. One of her favorite clients is Mrs. Frances and her dog Puddin'. Ashanti's dog Duchess and Puddin' are practically a doggie couple and everyone adores them. Ashanti is also branching out with dog treats; everyone is a fan. I love her business prowess. But nothing can prepare her for the rude and grumpy grandson of Mrs. Frances, Thad. He is now Puddin's new owner since Mrs. Frances is living in an assisted living facility that doesn't allow pets. He isn't a dog lover and doesn't see the importance of taking care of a pet. They butt heads and they don't know how they are going to make it on the road when Puddin' and Duchess go viral.
Getting Thad to agree to go 'on tour' for interviews with the dogs is tough but he agrees. That is because he makes a deal. A week of free overnight boarding for Puddin'. How can Ashanti say no to that? Ashanti is using these interviews to help her win a scholarship that would help her expand her business and get the perfect new building. And Thad is promoting his new business as well. He is opening a sports bar and more along with one of his best friends and it will be a place where veterans can find work or just relax and find camaraderie. On this work trip, they begin to talk and understand each other. Things get vulnerable and that's when their emotions come out. They begin to fall for each other but it's a slow burn. And it's so worth it.
I can always count on Farrah Rochon to give me a beautiful love story with relatable characters. This book is full of banter, chemistry, romance, heart, and vulnerability. I loved the premise and the setting was just perfect. I felt like I could imagine the scenes as I was reading. I really think this book would make a wonderful movie...so movie people please make it happen!
