For fans of Emily Henry, a debut about a rom-com screenwriter who doesn't believe in love and a divorce attorney who does, forced together at their high school reunion fifteen years after their breakup
Molly Marks writes Hollywood rom-coms for a living—which is how she knows "romance" is a racket. The one and only time she was naive enough to fall in love was with her high school boyfriend, Seth—who she ghosted on the eve of graduation and hasn't seen in fifteen years.
Seth Rubinstein believes in love, the grand, fated kind, despite his job as, well…one of Chicago's most successful divorce attorneys. Over the last decade, he's sought "the one" in countless bad dates and rushed relationships. He knows his soulmate is out there. But so far, no one can compare to Molly Marks, the first girl who broke his heart.
When Molly's friends drag her to Florida for their fifteenth high school reunion, it is poetic justice that she's forced to sit with Seth. Too many martinis and a drunken hookup later, they decide to make a bet: whoever can predict the fate of five couples before the next reunion must declare that the other is right about true love. The catch? The fifth couple is the two of them.
Molly assures Seth they are a tale of timeless heartbreak. Seth promises she'll end up hopelessly in love with him. She thinks he's delusional. He has five years to prove her wrong.
Wickedly funny, sexy, and brimming with laughs and heart like the best romantic comedies, Just Some Stupid Love Story is for everyone who believes in soulmates—even if they would never admit it.
My Review:
A rom-com screenwriter who doesn't believe in love and a divorce lawyer who is hopeless romantic meet up at their 15th high school reunion and leave the night making a bet and a point to prove; are soulmates real? The bet: you have five couples now pick which ones will survive and which romances will burn in flames. Whoever has the most matches correct wins.
Molly and Seth were high-school sweethearts with hopes of forever...and then she broke his heart. They haven't seen or spoken to each other in 15 years, but that changes at their 15-year high school reunion. She is doing everything she can to avoid him, but fate has another thing coming because they are placed at the same table sitting side by side. Even though it didn't work out, Molly is apologetic but knows how to keep her distance. Seth is flirty and can't help but want to spend more time with her. Molly is a total cynic and he believes in happily ever after. They begin to go back and forth with their charming, witty banter and that's when the brilliant idea of a bet comes to life. He believes in soulmates and she doesn't and the only way to prove their stance is to make a wager; whoever predicts the most matches between 5 couples wins. This sparks their attraction and chemistry and they give in for one night to their wants and desires. Of course, it can't possibly just stop at one night.
As the months go on, they continue to communicate through email and share updates on their personal lives and updates on the couples they bet on. Their emails are flirty, and sweet, and it makes it easier to let down their walls. Where Seth has always felt like the one chasing her, she is left wanting to chase him and hurt when she learns of his engagement. Why did it have to happen as soon as she realized that more with Seth may be in the cards for her?
Even when Seth's engagement fell through and a pandemic hit, their friendship and emails gave them comfort. And when they finally got to see each other in person, fireworks went off and it finally felt like the timing was right. But love doesn't buy you happiness. Both of them had to work on themselves and understand why their love lives were so complex.
I thought the premise of the story was so good and while it did take me a bit to get into the story, I got there. The last 150 pages sealed the deal for me and made me believe their love had the possibility to be the real deal. Yes, Seth and Molly are opposites but their chemistry was always there. acting it in chemistry. It was all about timing and learning to love and respect themselves too.
