Apart from missile and drone attacks, Iran has so far not launched any other attacks on Israel. Earlier, Tehran claimed that those were the Islamic Republic's response to Israeli missile strikes on the Iranian Embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Since then, the two sides have not opted for a direct offensive against each other. In the second week of May 2024, Kamal Kharrazi, an Adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made it clear that Iran could be pushed into building nuclear weapons, if Israel threatened its existence! With this, Kharrazi posed a veiled nuclear threat to the Jewish Nation.
Tension between the two West Asian countries has been going on since April (2024) as both the countries have launched attacks and counter-attacks. The Government of Benjamin 'Bibi' Netanyahu in Tel Aviv has got involved in a proxy war with Iran during Israel's ongoing war against the Palestinian Hamas Movement. However, Iran and Israel are yet to get engaged in a full-scale war. Defence experts are of the opinion that the two countries are closely monitoring each other's activities.
Talking to the local media on May 9, 2024, Kharrazi said: "We have no decision to build a nuclear bomb but should Iran's existence be threatened, there will be no choice but to change our military doctrine." He also said: "In the case of an attack on our nuclear facilities by the Zionist Regime, our deterrence will change." In other words, Kharrazi clearly warned that Iran could launch a nuclear attack on Israel, if necessary.
Iran has repeatedly claimed that it has no plans to make nuclear weapons, stressing that Tehran has pursued only a peaceful nuclear programme. However, the Western countries have expressed suspicion that Tehran is making nuclear weapons under the guise of a peaceful nuclear programme, claiming that the Islamic Republic has already made great progress in this regard.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on the matter, banned the development of nuclear weapons in a fatwa (religious edict) in the early 2000s, stating that it was haram (forbidden) in Islam. However, the then-Intelligence Minister of Iran said in 2021 that Western Powers pushed his country to seek nuclear weapons. Since then, the US and its Western allies have expressed concern about Iran's nuclear weapons development project. Kharrazi's recent comments have fuelled the speculation anew. Some of Iran's nuclear research and uranium enrichment facilities, including Natanz, are located in the Isfahan region.
It may be noted that the Iranian Armed Forces attacked Israel with about 200 drones and missiles on April 13 night. As Israel has a strong anti-missile defence system thanks to countries like Jordan and the US, it repelled about 99% of Iranian drones and missiles. Hence, the Jewish nation managed to avoid any serious damage. Earlier on April 1 (2024), Israel launched a missile attack on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, killing some senior Iranian diplomats and defence officials. Later, Iran claimed that it carried out the missile and drone attacks on Israel on the night of April 13 in retaliation of the Zionist Regime's April 1 missile attack on the Iranian Embassy in the Syrian capital.
