It is a known fact that Thai people really love Japanese food simply by looking at the number of Japanese restaurants available in Bangkok. In my previous business travels, partners are always bringing us to Japanese restaurants for meals and in recent years more authentic Japanese restaurants from Japan has opened up branches in Bangkok
Originating from Shinjuku Japan, Momo Paradise specialises in all-you-can-eat shabu shabu and sukiyaki buffet. With 20 outlets across Bangkok, Momo Paradise is well-loved among the locals and some of the popular outlets like this one in ICON Siam are consistently packed with customers or a line of waiting customers
There are seats inside the restaurant as well as the outside foyer of the restaurant which is more open to the public and more troublesome to get the ingredients and sauces from the buffet offerings. As the restaurant was fully packed, we had to take the only available table in the foyer after being in the queue for 30 minutes. Each table inside has good privacy as they are booth seats with a relatively high partition which keeps the watchful eye of the neighbouring tables from you
The buffet is semi self-service so you can help yourself to items like vegetables, tofu and some noodles from the bar. You can also get drinks from the dispenser and make your own dipping sauce. Unlike the Chinese hotpot, the available dipping sauces are limited to mostly shoyu, sesame oil, pepper, chilli powder and salt. They also have minced garlic, spring onion and some pre-made sesame sauce. For beverages, they have the usual soft drinks like cola, sprite and also green tea
There are 2 choices for the buffet; standard and premium. The difference lies in the meat quality whereas the premium offers wagyu beef as one of the meat selections. We went for the standard which was at THB729 before tax. You can have a choice of soup base from Shabu Shabu soup, Sukiyaki and Karamiso
We chose the dual pot and got the Sukiyaki and Tonkotsu soup for Shabu Shabu
The meats and some items are ordered via the servers and these include; US prime beef chuck roll, beef short plate, Kurobuta pork shoulder, chicken Tsumire, duck and mochi. Each serving has 4 to 5 pieces of thinly sliced premium meat, which cooks quickly in the boiling soup. Instead of prawn paste, the chicken was made into a paste to make chicken balls
Overall, the meat quality at Momo Paradise is considered ok with the price of the buffet in consideration. Other offerings like vegetables and cheese balls and mochi, they are pretty general in variety and nothing too surprising. I enjoyed my pork at Momo Paradise but after being spoiled by places like HaidiLao, the lack of food choices kind of left me mildly satisfied. Those looking for an authentic Japanese Shabu Shabu experience would enjoy this any day
