Two direct armed conflicts are going on in two different parts of the globe. In fact, the international community entered the year 2024 with two wars. In the 1980s, a Bengali poet had mentioned that "May God destroy the armoury of the United States". However, his hope still remains unfulfilled. Instead, all the countries have boosted their armoury in the last five decades. In the pretext of national security, they have increased budget allocations to the defence sector every year.
The amazing fact is that the world is enriched with the history of not one, but two World Wars! In spite of knowing the horrors of using nuclear weapons and their consequences, identifying itself as a nuclear power is a matter of pride for a modern state. Actually, states should have felt shame for insulting human beings and also for annihilating their own species with the help of science and technology. Disarmament agreements, in actuality, are nothing, but wastage of papers, as well as time.
If the existence of a state is a fact, then the war is a fact, too! One can consider the state as an instrument of exploitation or may also think that the state was born out of violence. However, the person should accept that violence is an integral part of statecraft. Soldiers, who go to the battlefield, are basically citizens of a country. Incidentally, they have to sacrifice their lives first. When the war escalates, citizens go to the battlefield on a voluntary basis. Nationalism, too, is no longer limited within the boundaries of a state. The feeling of nationalism intensifies during a war, and crosses the border. It is the easiest way for the ruling class to return to power by making itself relevant during any critical crisis, including economic, political, social, regional or global. However, war is followed by financial crises, famines, depressions and even epidemics.
War is accompanied not only by the loss of lives, but also by the loss of human dignity. In fact, the loss of human dignity is greater than the loss of lives. Now, almost all the countries have powerful missiles that can wipe out an entire city within a second. Apart from claiming lives, missile attacks make people homeless. Modern technology allows warmongers to turn thousands of people into refugees by pushing a button from far away. With this, innocent people lose their Right to Live with Dignity. War mostly affects women and children, as the level of their humiliation increases during an armed conflict.
War damages nature, too. With the destruction of agricultural lands, the possibility of growing crops is also destroyed. It affects the global economy. When the war spreads from land to water, the maritime trade gets disrupted. As a result, the price of everything - from daily necessities to fuel - goes up, and the Developing Nations appear the brunt of it.
One can discover more battlefields parallel to a war, with Human Rights being violated across the globe. Now, people often talk about third generation Human Rights! While the Right to Life is considered as the first generation Human Rights, the second generation Human Rights are social and cultural in nature, and the third generation Human Rights are universal. The nature of third generation Human Rights is basically collective. For example, one can mention Global Warming, food crisis or pandemic. The entire world has to deal with these issues together.
A constant barrage of missiles on any particular territory can easily displace many and destroy a few generations. Any state can justify a war either in the pretext of self-defence or in the pretext of self-recognition. However, there is no time to think about third generation Human Rights in that case. By that time, all the progress made regarding the first two generations of Human Rights is destroyed.
