By Emma Di Salvo
Calling out to all you fabulous singletons who love to read. What better time in your life to read more than when you're flying solo. Having more "me" time means you can fill your spare time exploring new genres, trying out different authors and maybe even listening to your favourite book on audio (on full volume, 'cause who's going to complain)?
This is a time in your life that is meant to be enjoyed, so with that in mind, here are five books to help put that extra spring in your step!
The Death Of Mrs Westaway By Ruth Ware
This is one of my favourite books of all time. It follows the very likeable and highly astute Hal, who one day receives a mysterious letter containing details of an inheritance. Hal very quickly realises that this letter has been sent to the wrong person.
But does this stop Hal? No way. She visits and even stays with the family that believes she is one of them (a Westaway), and as you can imagine, all manner of Hell breaks loose!
If you're feeling a bit low and your confidence isn't what it used to be, read this book. The audacity of this character is quite hilarious, and her confidence is something to be admired. She isn't interested in men, nor does she let herself become wooed by any of the male characters in the book. I recommend listening to the audiobook before you sleep so you can doze off giggling!
Misery By Stephen King
This book is enough to put anyone off being in a relationship! But seriously, if you're feeling a bit jaded from your last one or had your heart broken by some (enter expletive of choice), this book is perfect.
We follow the character of Paul Walker, a famous novelist whose car breaks down in the snow right outside antagonist Annie Wilkes' house.
This book by genius Stephen King is suspenseful, terrifying, yet deliciously gratifying. If you think you don't need to read the book as you've seen the movie, think again. The ending is quite different and much more gruesome. You've been warned!
A Court Of Thorns And Roses By Sarah J. Mass
If you're optimistic about finding a relationship or are just in the mood for romance, this book is for you. It is the most romantic series (yes, it's a series) I have ever read.
The story follows Feyre, a girl whose survival rests on her hunting ability.
One fateful day she kills a wolf in the forest only to discover that killing something so precious comes at a price. She is dragged to a magical kingdom and told she must stay there to atone for the murder of the wolf.
Her captor, who is at first furious with Feyre, mistreats her. But he is hiding much more than just a bad temper. If this story sounds familiar, it does share some parallels with Beauty and the Beast, but trust me, it's a million times better!
Single On Purpose By John Kim
Who says being single is a bad thing? Many people actually choose to fly solo and are very content. Learning how to be on your own is an important life skill that everyone should experience at least once, according to the author (and therapist), John Kim.
Knowing there is more to life than who we fall in love with can be a revelation to some who have been in relationships their whole life. This powerful and inspirational non-fiction is for anyone who wants to work on their relationship with themselves first before diving into a romantic partnership.
A few of my single girlfriends have read this book and given it the thumbs up.
Little Women By Louisa May Alcott
I can't end the list without mentioning this feminist classic. Little Women was so inspiring for me growing up, as I'm sure it was for many other young girls.
The women in this book are strong, outspoken and unafraid. While it is true that love is important for some of the characters, for others (such as Jo), her ambition to be a writer steals her focus.
The biggest takeaway from this book is that while all the sisters are unique, they also know what they want and don't allow people to stand in their way. This is a great book to read if you're single and want to feel inspired to follow your ambition.
Whether you're single by choice or just unlucky in love, there will always be a book to uplift, inspire and empower. That is the magic of literature. You may want to escape into a fantasy novel or work on your relationship with yourself. Whatever your situation, remember—being single can be fabulous because you are fabulous.
Happy Reading!
