Ah Yat Seafood recently shifted to Miramar Hotel from their Turf Cty outlet and was having a promotion for dim sum and seafood so I grabbed the opportunity and brought my family there for dim sum

Occupying the original space by Peach Garden, Ah Yat share the space with Owen Seafood just like in Turf City. Located on the 2nd level of the hotel, Ah Yat is on the left while Owen Seafood is on the right

Sandwiched between both restaurants is an open live seafood area supplied by Unique Seafood Market. Customers can look at the tanks and pick the live seafood from prawns, crabs, fish, lobster, clams and geoduck. Even with the live fish tanks, the area is kept clean without any fishy smell

The restaurant is quite spacious but I can tell only fundamental renovations have been done to the space after Peach Garden vacated. There is a bare minimum in decorations with a bright false ceiling and wooden floorboards. As the space was originally planned as a ballroom, there are no windows, therefore it can be quite dark. The new ceiling lights do brighten up the area but do not provide any nice atmosphere for dining

As they were having a 50% promotion for live seafood, I ordered steam prawns after choosing my victims from the live tanks. The prawns were quite big and the price was very reasonable after the 50% discount. Since they are live prawns, I don't even need to talk about the freshness. The juiciness and sweetness of the prawns were top notch and the flesh was bouncy and crunchy. I could easily eat an entire plate of prawns but we also ordered many other items

As my mum loves fish, I also chose a smaller live soon hock fish for her which is also quite reasonable in the price tag after the discount. I chose the deep-fried soy sauce cooking method, which I prefer to steamed fish. The meat was springy and succulent with nice crispy skin. The fish was fried so nicely that even some of the bones could be eaten with the sauce which was both savoury and sweet

We also ordered some of their dim sum like siew mai, steamed pork ribs, steamed rice rolls and baked char siew pastry. The dim sum is generally ok in flavour except the steamed pork ribs which were slightly tough to bite and bland in taste. The rest of the items were done well with fresh and juicy ingredients. The pastry was flakey and buttery but the char siew filling was not that fantastic

Some other items we order include the pork trotter jelly with jellyfish, breaded eggplant with pork floss and plain ee fu noodles. My mum really loved the pork trotter jelly which was quite bland in taste so you need to dip it in the vinegar sauce but the taste is quite refreshing and nice as a starter dish. The eggplant was fried perfectly with an additional layer of meaty flavour from the pork floss topping. The ee fu noodles were nice with a generous amount of mushroom and chives which gave the noodles additional texture

When we finished our meal, the floor manager was very nice and offered us free dessert and we got a bowl of red bean soup each which was really pretty decent as the red bean was nicely cooked till softened and mashed up and the soup was on point for the sweetness

Overall, the food at Ah Yat Seafood Restaurant is quite on point with the fresh seafood as the highlight. The other cooked food was nice in flavour but nothing too special stood out in my mind. The flavours are closer to Cantonese-styled cooking so it is definitely a hit with my mum and other older patrons which was a majority of their clientele when I visited. I would recommend them for family gatherings as well as for seafood lovers
