Foggy Day on Kiawah
"I like the muted sounds, the shroud of grey, and the silence that comes with fog."
Om Malik
Ann-Christine has challenged us this week to address Magical - and what a beautiful time of year to do so. I'm guessing our northern followers are reveling in the magic of the year's first snowfall and the holiday season. Here on Kiawah it's the fog that sometimes settles onto our shores that brings us a sense of quiet and calm and yes, magic. Earlier this week that is exactly what happened here on our lovely beach. The images above and below were captured during my daily walk and were quite a surprise considering there was no fog at all across the rest of the island.
Through The Fog
"The fog comes on little cat feet"
Carl Sandburg
Interestingly (at least to me) it was only when I looked online for Sandburg's well-known poem that I learned I'd been quoting it incorrectly for many years. Did anyone else think it was "the fog ROLLS in..."? Apparently he called it an American Haiku. Who knew?! As for my image above, to me it is reminiscent of the many vineyards we've seen, especially those in Italy. It's actually one of (happily) very few buildings built on Kiawah's beach. The image below includes the same building along with some of my fellow beach walkers. It's the most people I've seen on the beach since summer ended. Apparently fog is a real "draw"!
Beachwalkers and Fog, Kiawah Island
"Beneath the foggy sky the glowing sea is hazy, the soft light of a scarf over a lamp."
Melissa Barbeau
Two more favorite images from my walk that day. The first is an image of the sea itself and the graceful sea oats along the shore. The second is the result of my dabbling into an artistic impression of the day.
Sea Oats on Kiawah's Shore
"Sometimes we need the fog to remind ourselves that all of life is not black and white."
Jonathan Lockwood Huie
Artistic Impression of the Fog
"Everything is lovely, In a misty morning glaze. I like misty water, I like fog and haze."
Raymond Douglas Davies
Also edited with an impressionist's brush, this colorful scene greeted me as I arrived back home from the day's adventure. We have very little autumn color here but on Kiawah but I have this lovely tree in my yard which turns a bright red each autumn. It's been particularly lovely this year and its color has lasted far longer than usual.
Autumn's Reward
"Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower."
Albert Camus
Finally, full disclosure, I did NOT take this week's final image, I wish I had! It was made by my brother of his adorable grandson. I thought it so perfect for the challenge that with his permission I decided to include it. As many of us enjoy the holiday season, this image expresses the absolute MAGIC of Christmas for children. As the little one looks out the frosty window of a holiday train ride through a Christmas village, his cherry cheeks and bright eyes say everything there is to be said about Holiday Magic.
Holiday Magic
"Children see magic because they look for it."
Christopher Moore
