One can find dead bodies scattered near Al-Shifa, the largest Medical Complex and Central Hospital in the Gaza Strip, and experience the stench emitted by those bodies, and mass graves beneath the surface. As incubators are not working due to the shortage of electricity, newborns are wrapped in tin foils and placed next to warm water or lying side by side so that they can absorb heat from each other's body in order to stay warm! The global community has become accustomed to such unimaginable scenes.
Israel's military rampage continues in Gaza to retaliate the terror attacks carried out in the Jewish State by the Palestinian Hamas Movement on October 7, 2023. Tel Aviv has claimed that the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) discovered a 55mt-long fortified tunnel near Al-Shifa Hospital on November 19. In a statement, the IDF said that Hamas built the 10mt-deep tunnel, with a blast-proof door, under the biggest hospital in Gaza Strip as a part of its hideout tactics. The military statement read: "This type of door is used by the Hamas terrorist organisation to block Israeli Forces from entering the command centres and the underground assets belonging to Hamas."

Although no one knows the true extent of destruction in Gaza, the UN has claimed that at least 10,000 Palestinians have been killed and the majority of them are children. This amount of infanticide in a war or in an armed conflict is unprecedented in the World History. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin 'Bibi' Netanyahu has dismissed criticisms in this regard, stating that Hamas is solely responsible for this situation as they are using civilians as shields. He further said that the Palestinian Movement was also using hospitals as one of their main bases. The essence of his statement is that the Israelis will destroy shields of their enemies, and nothing can be done about it even if countless lives, including those of helpless civilians and newborn babies, are lost. The term collateral damage was used to refer to civilian casualties during the US invasion of Afghanistan at the beginning of this millennium. The Israeli Prime Minister has taken this concept to a new level.
Netanyahu's goal is clear… to destroy Hamas and to establish Israeli sovereignty not only over Gaza, but over entire Palestine, including the West Bank of the Jordan River. He did not openly deny the existence of an independent Palestine, but the Two-State solution seems far-fetched after the events that have taken place in the past few weeks. How long Netanyahu can hold power has become a secondary issue as his extreme campaign has already given the Palestine crisis a different dimension. Literally, the existence of the people of Palestine is in deep crisis.
There is little hope of a diplomatic solution to this crisis as the institution, called the United Nations, has practically become irrelevant. The US has so far limited itself to a series of appeals. Perhaps, President Joe Biden is not willing to take the risk of making a big demand, as it would be a huge disgrace to the Number One Superpower in the world if the Israeli Prime Minister refuses to fulfil it. Right now, the Arab World, from Saudi Arabia to Iran, does not want to get involved in a major conflict with Israel. Furthermore, neither China nor Russia (and Europe) wants to see a new battleground after Ukraine.
Indian diplomacy, too, strives to maintain a balance in such a situation. Both the situation and the task are a difficult one. Reports suggest that different Heads of State did not see each other's face during their speeches at the (virtual meetings of) recent G20 Summit. It helped India, the current President of the G20, avoid its discomfort in the current global geopolitical scenario. Hence, with a heavy heart, it may be surmised that the children of Gaza and their parents will continue to be victims of the great war between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Hamas. Such is their destiny!
