The international community is quite familiar with the term Global Warming. With the progress of human civilisation, pollution has increased by leaps and bounds on the Mother Earth. And, excessive pollution has triggered Global Warming. Due to the increasing average temperature of the Earth, there is an increase in the volume of harmful gasses, too. However, vital gasses, like oxygen, decrease constantly. Scientists have already warned about Global Warming, asking people to be aware of this. However, deforestation and urbanisation have been going on arbitrarily across the globe. Scientists have predicted that the rising temperature of the Earth will melt the polar ice in the coming years, and landmass (especially along the beaches) will go under the sea.
Meanwhile, a new prophecy has been revealed as a section of scientists has claimed that the Planet Earth will die of suffocation in the next few billion years! They believe that doomsday is going to be more terrible.
In 2021, a research paper stated that the oxygen-rich period on Earth would not last forever. Researchers were of the opinion that the Earth's atmosphere would undergo dramatic changes in the next few hundred years. They claimed that there was no oxygen in the atmosphere from the beginning. Oxygen, like other gasses, was formed in the atmosphere very late after the creation of the Earth. Oxygen appeared on the Earth through the Great Oxidation Event or Great Oxygenation Event (GOE) 2,300 million years ago. Researchers explained that the sudden injection of highly reactive free oxygen, toxic to the then-mostly anaerobic biosphere, might have caused the extinction of many existing organisms on the Earth. However, it helped the process of photosynthesis, thus cherishing lives on this planet. The GOE had also triggered an explosive growth in the diversity of minerals, with many elements occurring in one or more oxidised forms near the Earth's surface.
Scientists have estimated that the level of oxygen in the atmosphere will decrease dramatically in the next few hundred years. Instead, the amount of methane will increase. Methane is a harmful gas for humans, as well as animals. Hence, all oxygen-dependent organisms will become extinct in case of any changes in atmosphere. Breathing problems will increase, with the decrease of oxygen.
Researchers have further claimed that the volume of carbon dioxide, too, will decrease due to the Global Warming and increasing brightness of the Sun. Even trees will not be able to exist as photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide. The Earth will become devoid of plants in the next few hundred years because of the lack of carbon dioxide. Scientists believe that the decreasing number of plants will be one of the causes of oxygen deficiency.
There will be more than one reason behind the oxygen depletion. According to the researchers, the volume of oxygen will decrease a lot in the next few hundred years, and it will disturb the ecosystem, apart from making it difficult for creatures to survive. Meanwhile, a group of scientists have expressed hope that an alternative arrangement would be made by that time. Maybe, people will settle on another planet in the future!
