When tourists visit Korea, one of the first meals they would like to try is Korean barbeque as it is often showcased in dramas and variety shows. There are plenty of Korean BBQ shops in the entire country with some on the expensive side selling exclusive cuts of meats or some cheap and affordable shops along Galmaegisal Street; specializing in selling just skirt meats.

If I only have limited meals to eat in Korea, I would not waste it on Korean BBQ since there are plenty of good quality ones in Singapore as well. As it was my friend's first visit to Seoul, Korean BBQ was a must-eat on her list so we popped into the most crowded store along Dongdaemun when we were too tired to think of which cuisine to have for dinner. Named Hanguggwan, this seemed to be a chain offering 24-hour BBQ restaurants which also has outlets in other areas

This outlet was super crowded when we visited around 7 to 8 pm and we waited for a while to get a table. The staff hardly speaks English although a couple of them can speak Mandarin so we were able to order without difficulty. If you cannot speak Mandarin, they do have an English menu and you can order by pointing to the items you need. In terms of environment, the space is very tight and cluttered and tables are placed very close to each other so you can be sharing a long table with another group of diners. As there were no hanging pipes to remove the oil and smoke from the grills, the air was very smokey and the floor very greasy. My shoes were greasy when I left the store

The menu offering is simple and nothing too fancy; kimchi stew, army stew, cold noodles, soy bean stew, steamed eggs and different cuts of pork and beef meat. As the restaurant focuses on Jeju pork, their meat menu is majority pork with only 1 or 2 options for beef. For pork, you can get the set which has a sample meat for each different cut like neck, belly and jowl or order the specific cut individually

The banchan ( sides) served were also simple; cabbage kimchi, spring onion kimchi as well as a seasoned perilla leaf. Condiments like raw garlic, bean paste, salt as well and raw lettuce are also provided. While the sides are refillable, it is quite difficult to get the attention of the staff as they are very understaffed

We ordered the set which came with a sample of the 3 different cuts of meat. For the set, they do have small, medium and large. We ordered a medium set which is priced at KRW 60,000 with approximately 2 pieces of meat per different cut. The meat is relatively fresh and medium thickness and 3 big oyster mushrooms. The staff will help to grill the meat but as they are understaffed, you do need to grill it yourself to prevent the meat from burning. The quality and taste of the meat were pretty ok and the price was definitely cheaper than the ones in Singapore. They are however not the best quality ones I have tasted before in Korea

We also ordered the egg roll and army stew which was priced at KRW 10, 000 each. The portion of the army stew was good for sharing for 2 persons and came with instant noodles, sausages and kimchi. It is fairly basic for army stew as there was no ham or baked beans and the flavour was more towards a spicy kimchi stew with added flavour from the sausages. The egg roll was prettily rolled up with a nice springy texture and slightly sweet flavour. There were also vegetable bits fried in the egg roll which gave it a nice crunch. The egg roll is quite lightly seasoned so the tomato sauce provided was a great dip to provide a sweet and tangy taste

Overall, the meal here is cost-effective with acceptable quality of meat. Personally, the environment stresses me out slightly with the greasy floor and busy staff running up and down serving hot plates and soups and the noise was quite bad as you can hear everyone talking at the same time due to the closeness of the tables. If you want to try a fuss-free and simple Korean BBQ experience, you can visit this restaurant at Dongdaemun
