All Saints Day in Louisiana

This Wednesday is a day of celebration and obligations in the Catholic church. This day honors all the saints buried and gone to heaven. In South Louisiana we have taken the custom from France and made a family celebration out of the holiday... Lisa

In South Louisiana an old custom was to white wash the graves before laying wreath of flowers on the graves and the family sharing a meal at the graveside before attending evening mass. A time for families to gather together and share stories about family members already passed.

My grandfather ( who was Catholic) would get us kids up and make us breakfast :lost bread and sausage before taking us kids out to the grave yard to clean around graves and lay flowers and tell stories about all the family that had pass. After Mass the Priest would come bye and bless the graves.

Lost Bread ( French toast)

  • Day old bread ( whatever was leftover)
  • 2 tablespoon butter melted ( black skillet)
  • 4 large eggs (lightly beaten)
  • Dash salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a small bowl, beat the eggs with salt, sugar, milk, and vanilla. Pour into a flat-bottomed dish large enough to accommodate a few slices of the bread. Put bread slices into the dish to soak up some of the egg mixture, a few at a time. Turn with a spatula and let them soak on the other side, but not too long, or they will be too saturated and difficult to turn. Gently remove the soaked bread slices to the buttered skillet . Brown on both sides and sprinkle with powdered sugar before eating. Best when hot.

I think that , that no matter what your faith, you really do live on and on, as long as someone, anyone, is willing to come see you. Lisa
