Original Sin

I remember having Original Sin at least 10 or 15 years ago when I was not very keen on vegetarian food and my friend was trying to convince me that vegetarian food could be as tasty as non-vegetarian options

Fast forward to now, I am no stranger to vegetarian food as I do vegetarian stints every now and then and even though the vegetarian scene in Singapore has evolved greatly, I still remember that meal from Original Sin fondly

I was happy to visit Original Sin again after so many years and the restaurant was pretty similar to how I remember it to look. Decorated in a simple Mediterranean style, the restaurant was cosy yet spacious

The menu was quite extensive and similar to any Mediterranean restaurant although all the ingredients used are either vegan-friendly or vegetable-based

We ordered the Impossible pizza for sharing which came with Impossible meat, onion, chilli, parmesan and mozzarella. As you can tell from the pictures, the pizza was so good that I totally forgot to take a photo and all the slices were snatched up. The crust was beautifully oven-baked with a nice crusty dough and cheesy centre. I could not really taste the Impossible meat as the cheese and onion flavours took centerstage

The next side we had which was so good photos were forgotten was the lemongrass corn fritters served with lime coriander mayonnaise. Do not let the coriander scare you as the dip was really citrusy and refreshing which was perfect with the corn fritters. The fritters itself was fried till crispy with a soft creamy corn filling

For my own orders, I had the Moussaka which is baked layers of eggplant, potato, tomato, and spiced lentils and topped with a bechamel sauce. When my dish was served, it reminded me of the lasagna dish but instead of layers of pasta sheets, this was accomplished with layers of vegetables. The dish itself was strong in flavours as the sweetness and tanginess of the tomato complemented the Middle Eastern spice from the lentils while the bechamel sauce gave it a creamy balance. While the dish is not pretty to look at with everything mashed together, I find it a very appetizing and comforting dish

Some of the other dishes my colleagues ordered included the king oyster mushroom, spinach tortellini and Impossible pasta. Out of the 3 dishes which I tried, the grilled king oyster mushroom really surprised me. The texture of the mushroom was so crunchy and chewable that I felt like I was chewing on a piece of meat and the flavours of all the charred vegetables were just fantastic. If I were to visit Original Sin again, I would definitely order this dish. For the 2 pasta dishes, they were creamy and buttery and equally delicious

Overall, the food at Original Sin does not disappoint although most people will find the price quite high for a meatless meal. Personally, I will gladly return for the grilled king oyster mushroom as it was definitely the star of the meal
