No matter which Janome sewing machine you own, or may purchase down the road, chances are you will be able to add Ruler Work to your list of fun new techniques to try to help you get more from your machine. There's a Janome 1/4" Ruler Work foot for nearly every Janome sewing machine, so everyone can share in the fun! As always, your Janome Canada dealer can help ensure you get the right presser foot for your machine.
Once you have the correct presser foot, some fabric (chances are you have some) a pencil, or fabric marking tool, and The Janome Ruler Work Kit are all you need to get started learning this very fun and freeing technique.
Best news of all, the Janome Ruler Work Kit is now available for High Shank machines; Part Number RULERSET-HS and Low Shank machines; Part Number RULERSET-LS. To determine which model you have, drop the presser foot and measure up to the little thumb screw which attaches the foot holder (ankle as some call it) to the presser bar of the machine. If it's approximately 1/2" it's Low Shank. If it's approximately 1" it's High Shank.
If Free Motion quilting scares you, using a Ruler (or template) to guide the stitching is the perfect introduction into moving your fabric without the aid of the feed dogs of the machine doing the work, as is the case with regular sewing. The feed dogs of the machine will be dropped, or covered, so you're in complete control of moving the fabric in any direction. The 6 templates included in the Janome Ruler Work Kit provide the basis for unlimited creative possibilities.
Use the templates to create the handy project bag as instructed in the kit, then use them independently when quilting other projects. For example, I used the straight edge "ruler" included in the kit to quilt a series of squares on point and triangles which were inspired by the dense triangle embroidery design in the centre of the fabric.
I used the editing capabilities of the embroidery machine to duplicate and rotate the design, then used the straight edge ruler template to quilt the triangles around them.
The curved lines of the Jelly Fish embroidery design was the inspiration for using the curved acrylic template included in the 6-piece Janome Ruler Work Kit to quilt around it. Inspiration is everywhere and the rulers/ templates do all the work for you, so there's no guesswork.
Even something so simple as the thumb hole in the pair of scissors embroidery design below provided inspiration to use the small oval/ tear-drop template included in the kit for the quilting.
Use the rulers/templates as is, or combine the templates and some echo quilting to produce a totally unique design, as I created below for a t-shirt tote bag I created for my sister. Read more about that blog post HERE.
