it's all about what we're used to
we don't think about the fact
that when we're on the el
we're riding in a tin car
high above the street
on the very edge of a rail
not if we grew up
riding the els
we just get on one
els are a normal
part of life
and life is all about
taking the things we're used to
for granted
like breathing
those things
are simply part of us
so when we visit
different places
the things that are new
and exciting
to us
are as familiar
to those who live there
as the els are to us
we all go places
to see
things that are
different
than the things we're
used to
because after awhile
we actually stop
seeing
the everyday things
around us
the thrill wears off
from familiarity
and we are curious beings
so we are always looking
for the next thing
the thing
that will excite us
or shows us something
new
it's all about what we're used to
I was sitting in a cafe
in Paris
telling the waiter
how lucky he was
to have been born there
he said
he wanted to go
california
who wants to live here
he asked
in Paris
he said
and I just laughed
because he looked around
waving his hand up and down
the street
with such disgust
and scorn
at the very thing
I thought
was incredibly beautiful
life's funny that way
