Peeking Through
"Magic birds were dancing in the mystic marsh. The grass swayed with them, and the earth fluttered under them."
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
This week our Guest Host, Janet of This, That and The Other Thing (gotta love that title) has challenged us to share images of "something you normally overlook or something you think other people would overlook". I love that suggestion as I've often been told I see things that others don't. I am certain that most all photographers really do see things while others are often simply looking- and I agree with Janet - there is definitely a difference.
Here on Kiawah we are fortunate that nature truly surrounds us. Our marsh grasses are harbingers of the seasons' changes, blooming bright green, then a softer green, followed by brilliant gold and finally a soft beige. In my opening image I've captured some of summer's green peeking through an unusually high tide.
Curly Fronds
"What we see depends mainly on what we look for."
John Lubbock
The image above shows the detail I found deep within a growing plant, while the one below shares the heart of a large palm frond. Both are prevalent across the landscapes of Kiawah. Most people simply pass them by without a second thought.
Heart of Palm
"It is the nature of the strong heart, that like the palm tree it strives ever upwards when it is most burdened."
Phillip Sidney
As a last bit of local magic, I've included an image of the trees one passes while walking to a birds' nesting area at nearby Magnolia Gardens. The gardens provide visitors with a long wooden path over the waters and through the trees (seen behind the trees as a ghostly part of the image). Most visitors are busy hurrying to see the birds, which are indeed magical. But the trees are equally majestic, housing their own variety of wildlife both in the waters below and on the limbs above.
Mystical Forest
"Into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul."
John Muir
Looking farther afield, I've included a few images captured during our travels in China. First, in a pond filled with beautiful lily pads, I was focused on the simplicity of the lone pod below.
Pod from a Pond, China
"Neatly dissected down to its essence, life was one long series of lily pad hopping."
David Baldacci
Many would wonder what drew me to the image below. I couldn't honestly tell you except that it caught my eye and made me think about the lives of the real people of China.
Clean and Drying
"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."
Pablo Picasso
Finally, as we headed to one of China's many palaces we came upon this two-colored wall with its little square window. It drew my eye immediately.
Simple Wall, China
"The walls we build around us to keep sadness out also keeps out the joy."
John Rohn
