I have a super sweet tooth and love all cakes, pastries and desserts but have a certain weakness and soft spot for traditional Chinese desserts. My go-to dessert store is always 115 ( you can read the review by clicking on the link) in Chinatown Food Centre which we have been visiting since I was a kid

Whenever I have a good meal and the group suggests chilling somewhere for desserts, I will not hesitate if there is a good traditional dessert store nearby. We just had our dinner at Duxton Hill when we were walking around looking for a dessert place when we chanced upon Darkness Dessert

Opened in mid-2022, Darkness is nestled along the stretch of Korean restaurants in Tanjong Pagar and closes only at 1am which is perfect for the late diners around the area. Visibly different from the rest of the restaurant, Darkness Dessert has visual elements of Chinese symbols used in its logo and interiors. The tables used were also antique rosewood round tables with stools. The space itself is spacious and bright with a nice cosy atmosphere for chilling with your friends

The majority of the desserts are hot ones with the favourites like sesame paste, almond paste, red bean paste, and green bean soup and for iced desserts, they had mango pomelo, grass jelly as well as iced desserts. What makes their menu really interesting is the fact that they offer many different types of toppings to the main desserts like; ginko nuts, glutinous rice balls, fresh fruits and ice cream. On a side note, I visited the shop in Dec 2022 and they were pretty crowded on a Fri evening but early this year there was a wave of influencer marketing they did and they appeared on many social media platforms so I will assume they can be very crowded during weekends now

It was a very hot and warm night so we had green bean soup and green bean soup topped with glutinous rice balls. The rice balls were chewy and nice with the flowy fillings which is pretty similar to the frozen ones bought from supermarkets. The green bean soup at SGD 4.50 was not pricey and reminded me of the homecooked version as it was not overly sweet. Instead, you can taste the earthy taste of the mushed-up green beans with a balanced sweet flavour from the sugar used in boiling down the beans. The version with the rice balls cost SGD 1 in addition

I also ordered the mango pomelo sago as I wanted something cold and the dessert was topped with a sweet gooey mango puree. I liked that the dessert was not overpowering sweet but instead filled with the fragrance of the natural sweetness of the mango cubes and puree. The citrusy pomelo pulps and bursting sagos also created an additional layer which complements the creamy dessert. Their version of the mango pomelo dessert is more creamy and milky and I would have liked it with more mango chunks and to be slightly sweeter

Overall, I like the atmosphere at Darkness Desserts and the desserts are pretty decent in flavours and the price is also decent. It is a nice place to chill since they open till late on weekends
