"You should leave him," said Trudy.
"He wasn't always like he is now," sighed Meg. "He was different."
"Weren't we all," sighed Trudy. "Babe, he wears a mask and cape. That's red flag if there ever was one."
"Life changed him."
"It changes all of us but no one who's not in the movies, goes around in a mask and a cape. Imagine sitting next to him at a parent-teacher meeting."
"Well, when you put it that way," said Meg, biting her bottom lip.
"This is what I always ask people who don't realize the situation they're in. What would you tell someone else who was doing what you're doing? It's a good question. Put another woman in your position and ask yourself what you would say to her if she was dating a guy, who wore a mask and a cape?"
"I get your point. I suppose it is kind of weird."
"Ya think?"
"I'm just used to him dressing like that."
"Really? You don't think he stands out, just a little? He never smiles. Not to mention the fact that he's in black and white."
"So, you noticed that?"
"Everyone notices that."
"I admit, the black and white thing is bothersome. I asked him about it and he told me that life had drained the color out of him."
"And that's the man you want to be with?"
"Okay, I agree. He's a little different."
Trudy rolled her eyes. "That's a gigantic understatement."
"He's a vegetarian."
"What if you have kids with him and they're all gray?"
"I never thought about that," she said.
"I don't think you've thought about a lot of things."
"Maybe. But he's really nice."
"He's black and white. There, I've said it again."
"Mitzie likes him."
"Your cat likes everyone."
"That's true," said Meg. "She does."
"Maybe he's from the silent movie era and just got lost. I mean he could have stepped out of a film, landed in an alternate reality, and never found his way back."
"No. Guys didn't look like him back then."
Trudy nodded. "You're right. He is a hunk."
"I know, right?"
"Does he ever take off the mask?"
"No, not really."
"And you don't care?"
"Should I?"
"Think about it," said Trudy. "Think about the fact that you're with a man who has no color and wears a mask, ALL THE TIME."
"He always wears his cape too," she said, frowning. "He said he has to be ready for whatever comes next."
"I'm not sure which one of you is the craziest."
"You went out with Nick."
"Not the same thing. He had color and didn't wear a costume or anything."
"He sang to you all the time and your dog tried to bite him every chance he could."
"True."
Meg started laughing. "We really are a pair of squirrels. Squirrels with bad taste in men."
"I wish I could argue with that," sighed Trudy, dramatically.
"He knows I'm going to break up with him tonight."
"How?" asked Trudy.
"I left him a note on the bathroom mirror," she said.
"What did you say?"
"I said, I'M BREAKING UP WITH YOU TONIGHT SO BE READY. I broke my lipstick writing it. Why are you laughing again?"
"Why do you think I'm laughing, you nut job?" she snorted. "You're so funny."
"No, I'm not."
"Are too," said Trudy. "You fell for a guy who is black and white and wears a costume, ALL THE TIME."
"You're right. I did do that, didn't I?" she said, starting to chuckle. "What was I thinking?"
"No more men in capes and masks, or in black and white, for you," said Trudy. "Pinky swear."
Meg held out her little finger. "We aren't kids anymore, you know. Just because we sometimes act as if we still are."
"Do it!"
"Fine," she said, as they locked pinkies. "I swear."
"Let's get ice cream to celebrate."
"Deal," said Meg. "He really was in black and white, wasn't he."
"Yes. He really was."
"What is wrong with me?"
"I've been trying to figure that out since we were six."
"You'll tell me when you know, won't you?"
"Promise," said Trudy. "Did he ever let you touch the cape?"
"No. Never," said Meg, shaking her head.
"OMG," laughed Trudy. "Never?"
"Never," giggled Meg.
"This calls for double scoops," wheezed Trudy. "I'm buying."
