Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, stressed on ceasefire (between Russia and Ukraine), diplomacy and food crisis during the G20 Summit, held on the Indonesian island of Bali on November 15-16, 2022.
Prime Minister Modi expressed serious concern over the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, saying: "I have repeatedly said that we have to find a way to return to the path of ceasefire and diplomacy in Ukraine. Over the past century, World War II wreaked havoc in the world. After that, leaders of that time made a serious effort to take the path of peace. Now it is our turn." He also urged the G20 members to show "concrete and collective resolve" in order to ensure global peace and security.
On the side-lines of the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Modi held talks with US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron. According to sources close to the Government of India, the three leaders discussed the food crisis and renewable energy. The Indian PM said that the world had faced an acute food crisis during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and assured the Presidents of the US and France that India would be on track to achieve its target of generating 50% of its electricity from renewable sources, by 2030. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi ruled out "any restrictions" on energy supply and stability.
The Indian premier reportedly stated: "Global supply chains are in ruins. There is a crisis of essentials, essential goods all over the world. The challenge for the poor citizens of every country is more severe. Everyday life was already a struggle for them. They do not have the financial capacity to deal with the double whammy." He added: "Today's fertiliser shortage is tomorrow's food crisis, for which the world will not have a solution. We should build mutual agreement to maintain a stable and assured supply chain for both manure and food grains."
PM Modi further said: "The need of the hour is to show concrete and collective resolve to ensure peace, harmony and security in the world. I am confident that next year when the G20 meets in the holy land of Buddha and Gandhi, we will all agree to convey a strong message of peace to the world." It may be noted that the next G20 Summit is scheduled to be held in India.
The Prime Minister of India attended a total of 20 events during his two-day trip to Bali. He held one-to-one meetings with the Heads of the Government of the participating countries, including President Biden, President Macron and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, mainly to discuss different aspects of bilateral ties.
Incidentally, this was the first time when Prime Minister Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping since June 2020 when the Indian troops had clashed with the Chinese soldiers along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. It was undoubtedly a big event, as far as geopolitical strategy is concerned. Footage from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat's official YouTube channel showed PM Modi was talking to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken when President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan stopped nearby to speak with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Then, Modi was seen getting up from his seat and shaking hands with Xi, who smiled. Modi, flanked by an interpreter, also spoke to the Chinese President for a few minutes. They were soon joined by Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar. Several people, gathered around the two leaders, started capturing the moment with their mobile phone cameras. However, Modi and Xi did not hold a formal bilateral meeting on the side-lines of the G20 Summit.
Before leaving Bali, Prime Minister Modi assured G20 leaders that India was fully prepared to hold the Summit in 2023, stressing: "Today world has greater expectations from G20, and the relevance of our group has become more significant." He stated: "Millets can solve global malnutrition and hunger. We all must celebrate the 'International Year of Millets' with great enthusiasm next year."
Once again, the Indian PM stated: "We must not promote any restrictions on the supply of energy, and stability in the energy market should be ensured. Time-bound and affordable finance and sustainable supply of technology to developing countries is essential for inclusive energy transition. During India's G20 Presidency, we will work for global consensus on all these issues."
