Music reporter Vicki McCarthy shares all you need to know about a spooky festival coming to MK11 Live Music Venue in October.

If like me, you hate the thought of the clocks going back in autumn but look forward to the fun and
spookiness that Halloween brings, then I might have the event just for you!

Yeah, Halloween is pretty awesome, but there's a three-day event from Mexico that's becoming more popular every year, one that goes by the name of Día de los Muertos, which translates to Day of the Dead.

Despite the similarities and closeness in dates, the two festivals are actually different, with the roots of Día de los Muertos tracing back to the Aztec empire, over 3,000 years ago.

The Aztecs and other Nahua people living in what is now central Mexico held a cyclical view of the universe, and saw death as an integral, ever-present part of life.

Never being one to miss festival celebrations, MK11 Live Music Venue has an eerie extravaganza planned for you to experience from Friday 28 October to Sunday 30 October.

Over the weekend, you can enjoy live music over two stages, authentic Mexican street food (with vegetarian and vegan options), an array of the best tequilas and mezcals, delicious cocktails and maybe a few surprises!

At the festival, expect to be entertained by a mixture of free and ticketed events, such as the Spooky Funk Soul DJ set, Panic! at the Emo club night, a performance from The Undercover Hippy, as well as acoustic sets and Busker Sunday.

With dogs and children welcome until 18:00 each day, it doesn't have to be just the adults enjoying the revelries.

Speaking about the festival, MK11's owner Simon O'Brien said: "This is the first time we have marked Dia de los Muertos here, and we're looking forward to welcoming everyone over the three days.

"It's not mandatory, but we wholeheartedly encourage people to consider fancy dress to get into the spirit of the weekend, should they wish."

And what's Simon looking forward to the most?

"Besides the music and atmosphere?" he asked, "To be honest, it's the tequila and tacos for me! I could happily have them every day, given half the chance!"

And who can blame him? So, to be in with a chance of enjoying the tequila, tacos and live music too, get down to MK11 for what's set to a rather spooktacular weekend!
