MK Gallery have announced the nomination of Anna Candlin from the University of Hertfordshire for the Platform Graduate Award 2022.
During the past month the Gallery has been exhibiting new artistic talent from three local universities as part of the regional Platform Graduate Award. The exhibition is part of a wider regional scheme lead by CVAN South East (Contemporary Visual Arts Network South East) in partnership with Aspex in Portsmouth, MK Gallery, Modern Art Oxford, Phoenix Art Space in Brighton, Arts University Plymouth and Turner Contemporary in Margate.
Following the exhibition and events programme across the participating galleries, an artist from each gallery is nominated for the award.
This year's selected artists for MK Gallery were Anna Candlin from the University of Hertfordshire, Anisa Riaz Murshed from the University of Bedfordshire and Chloe Smith from the University of Northampton.
Roisin Callaghan, Producer, Public Programmes (Community & Partners) MK Gallery said: 'We are delighted to announce Anna Candlin from the University of Hertfordshire as our graduate artist to be shortlisted for the Platform Graduate Award 2022. Anna will go to the next stage of the Platform Graduate Award where she will be presenting her work to a panel, alongside nominees from the partner galleries.
'I was really impressed by this year's degree shows and selected what I thought were strong graduates from our three universities to show at MK Gallery.
'All three artists have created some exciting work and so different from each other which made the final decision of who to nominate a tricky one. I will be following all three artists to see how their work develops in the future.
'Anna's sculptural pieces evoke an almost familiarity with the body and with the natural environment. They have a poignance with our current climate in a way that is very thought provoking. I'm intrigued to see how she takes her practice forward.
Anna Canlin said: 'I'm delighted to have been chosen to go on to the next stage and look forward to presenting my work in front of the panel in November.'
The overall winner will be announced in December 2002. The panel of judges, includes a representative from each partner and a guest artist, with previous years seeing Mikhail Karakis, Harold Offeh, Rosalind Nashashibiand, and Tai Shani contribute to the final decision. The successful graduate will receive a £2000 bursary and 12 months of mentoring support.
Oliver Sumner, Manager of CVAN South East said: 'This award provides a much-needed springboard for artists graduating from our local Universities. It could not happen without the enduring engagement of our Higher Education partners, and of course this year's four host venues in the CVAN South East network. My thanks go to them all, and most of all to the artists themselves who have amazed us despite the pandemic disruption of their final year.'
The Platform Graduate Exhibition at MK Gallery will close on 2 October 2022. Entry is free.
