THIRD ANNE PERALTA-MALONZO
THE division of the province of Maguindanao has been ratified following the over 99 percent "yes" vote among the residents during a plebiscite, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Sunday, September 18, 2022.
"Resoundingly, the creation of the (two) provinces of Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur had long been hoped for by the Maguindanaoans and their elected leaders," the Comelec said in a statement.
"This dream has now become a reality with the success of the plebiscite and the ratification of RA (Republic Act) No. 11550," it added.
Based on the official and complete canvass of the Provincial Board of Canvassers of Maguindanao, a total of 711,767 participated in the electoral exercise out of the 818,790 total voters.
A total of 706,558 or 99.27 of the actual votes were "yes" while 5,209 or .73 percent were "no."
Comelec Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said the Maguindanao plebiscite is the second highest voter turnout among the province-wide plebiscites in the country, next to the electoral exercise that separated Compostela Valley from Davao del Norte in 1998.
It is, however, the highest in terms of the total number of registered voters and total number of voters who actually voted.
RA 11550 was signed by former president Rodrigo Duterte in May 2021.
Maguindanao del Norte will be composed of the towns of Barira, Buldon, Datu Blah Sinsuat, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Kabuntalan, Matanog, Northern Kabuntalan, Parang, North Upi, Sultan Kudarat, Sultan Mastura and Talitay. Datu Odin Sinsuat will be the capital and seat of government.
Maguindanao del Sur, on the other hand, will consist of the towns of Ampatuan, Buluan, Datu Abdulla Sangki, Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Datu Montawal, Datu Paglas, Datu Piang, Datu Salibo, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Datu Unsay, Gen.
