"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."
I was invited to a Shiitake Mushroom Log Inoculation Workshop & Drumming Circle at the Trinity Session in Johannesburg. I didn't know what to expect, however I was blown away with the amount of hands-on knowledge that was shared and it was even more special for me because my dad joined me there.
We started off by meeting the friendly and welcoming team at The Trinity Session, Stephan, Pauline as well as Matthew and Sven from Afrifungi. We were taken on a tour of the premises. I was in awe of the number of community projects that the Trinity Session have already completed.
I am an amateur gardener. I have not attempted growing mushrooms before. I probably consume mushrooms at least once a week in pizza, pastas and curries.
So delicious and each mushroom tastes a little different. My favourite mushroom is a Shiitake Mushroom because it has a more intense, buttery taste. Which is your favourite?
Shiitake Mushroom Log Inoculation Workshop
This workshop was an opportunity to engage with living systems and develop a reverence for our ecology by embracing the fungal kingdom. Did you know that mushrooms can heal our ecology and our bodies? The Shiitake Mushroom Log Inoculation workshop was co –produced by Afrifungi and The Trinity Session.
I was so intrigued to learn from the course coordinators together with my dad. We started off the workshop by learning about the lifecycle of the Shiitake mushroom and then the care that is required for them on a daily/monthly basis. The session was very interactive and there were lots of opportunities to ask questions.
Beautiful pieces of wood
Next up was the practical part of how to grow Shiitake mushrooms step by step and where your get your hands moving. I selected a piece of log, and it's not an ordinary tree, it has to be from tree that is suitable for the mycelium to thrive in, and my piece of log came from an oak tree. We then started drilling holes throughout the log. I must confess that it was it was indeed exhilarating to use a drill, sort of a stress reliever too.
Then we plugged each hole with specially prepared dowels which contained Shiitake mycelium and then sealed it with hot wax to avoid any bacteria/bugs to enter the hole and destroy the efforts.

Matt and Sven then shared more advise on once the mushroom starts to fruit and cleared up any questions.

Mushroom inspired snacks
Then we headed inside to enjoy some delicious mushroom inspired snacks and warm drinks. There was a delicious mushroom soup, mushroom quiche, mushroom pate, and mushroom truffles to enjoy. I loved the fact that mushrooms were the star of every dish.
Drum Session
Paul Boyter from Harmonics SA led the Drumming session. What a vibe, and an all-round amazing experience. The drumming session at the Tipper warehouse will be a forever memory with me. Imagine a class where no words are spoken, all instructions given by hand movements and the sound of a drum only. For the full hour my dad and I played drums and it was so much fun.
Then at the end of the session Paul played the Handpan, an instrument that looks like a weber braai in shape, has lots of indents on it and makes the most peaceful sounds.
After a full afternoon of learning and activities, I can say that my cup was full. My dad and I loved attending the workshops and we are also well on our way to being mushroom farmers.
You can purchase oyster mushroom kits directly from The Trinity Session too so you can grow your own mushrooms at home.

Learning to grow mushrooms was so much fun and I can't wait to start enjoying my very own mushrooms in the near future. A huge thank you to The Trinity session for inviting us to this extraordinary experience, simply unforgettable.
