The Taliban recaptured Afghanistan and formed a Government in Kabul on August 15, 2021, with the help of Pakistan after years of insurgency. Now, the Deobandi-Pashtun Islamic fundamentalist, militant Islamist and jihadist outfit wants to teach Pakistan a lesson.

The Taliban have accused Islamabad of violating the territorial integrity of Afghanistan, taking the neighbouring country to the UN. The Taliban-led Government of Afghanistan has reportedly lodged a direct complaint with the UN Security Council (UNSC) against Pakistan over the April 16 (2022) incident. The top Taliban leadership has also informed the World Body that Kabul would not tolerate the security threat posed by Islamabad.

On April 16, 2022, at least 40 people, including women and children, were killed in a Pakistani airstrike in Afghan Provinces of Kunar and Khost. The Taliban Government immediately condemned the airstrike, asking Pakistan not to violate Afghan airspace. In the last week of April, Kabul informed the UNSC that Pakistan not only violated International Law by carrying out the airstrike, but also violated the Human Rights of the people of Afghanistan. This issue had reportedly been raised by Afghanistan previously also via letters dated February 22, 2019, August 22, 2019, and July 17, 2020.

In a letter to the President of the UNSC, a senior official of the Afghan Foreign Ministry mentioned that the Pak airstrike damaged several camps of the Afghan Army, civilian residences, and Government buildings. He also stated that the incident could deteriorate bilateral ties. At the same time, the Taliban official told the UNSC President that Pakistan violated a resolution adopted in 2002 to maintain cordial bilateral ties.

It may be noted that a representative of the Afghan Government, led by former President Ashraf Ghani, had lodged a similar complaint against Pakistan in the past. This time, the Taliban, the Haqqani Network and the Tehreek-e-Taliban, together, have made the allegation against Pakistan. According to international political observers, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi and the then head of the Pakistani spy agency, Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, had played a key role in launching attacks on Afghanistan.

Experts are of the opinion that the deteriorating ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan would have a long-term impact on Regional Geopolitics. The antagonistic relation between the Afghan Taliban and Pakistan would certainly create a security crisis for the latter.
