Fortuna Cools, a Phillipines-based lifestyle brand, has launched a packable, lightweight cooler which is insulated with fibre from upcycled coconut husks.
The coolers, known as Nutshell, are insulated with fibre from upcycled coconut husks which would otherwise have been burned as waste. The leftover coconut husks are sourced from small-scale farmers in the Philippines, providing them with an additional source of income and creating new jobs in rural areas.
The collapsible coolers, which can be folded and packed away when not in use, have been built with sustainability in mind. The design and material choices are "grounded in circularity", according to Fortuna Cools.
Nutshell insulation is biodegradable and useful as mulch or plant root protection at the end of its insulating life. The coconut fibre insulation is accessible via internal pockets to separate the degradable and recycled components.
Fortuna Cools, which was born in a fishing village in the Philippines, began as a graduate school project to improve local fish packaging.
Last month, Nutshell Coolers launched a campaign via Kickstarter and have managed to raise over £115,000 to date in support.
