Ghanaians have been urged to lead the process to amend the 1992 Constitution which is seen as inimical to development and democracy rather than waiting for politicians and beneficiaries to trigger for change.

"It is time there should be an open dialogue on the Constitution and look at the portion that is not helping us; remove it, change it and see how we grow forward with it", General Secretary of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah charged in an interview MyNewsGh.com on Orange FM.

According to her, Ghanaians should take the bull by the horn and initiate the process themselves than wait for politicians and interested groupings who are benefitting directly or indirectly from the current Constitution

"There should be a referendum by the people of Ghana to decide which way to follow.  If you take it to Parliament, there are parliamentarians who are Ministers, and even when the opposition [parties] also come to power, they appoint some parliamentarians as Ministers and they work in Parliament and I believe they will be compromised and will be thinking about their interest", the General Secretary pointed out.

It comes after the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)  said President Nana Akufo-Addo must trigger processes for an amendment of the 1992 Constitution to reflect the 10-year-old recommendations of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC).

According to Nana Yaa Jantuah, at the time, certain clauses were put into in to protect the leaders which need to be removed.

"It appears the Constitution is there to protect politicians and leaders", the CPP General Secretary stated.
