Columbus Screen by Wendy Ramshaw, Canary Wharf, London, July 2021

One of the many pieces of public art at Canary Wharf is the Columbus Screen by jewellery designer Wendy Ramshaw. In addition to her intricate jewellery works, she has also tackled larger scale architectural works, such as this screen in the Columbus Courtyard (2000) and the Edinburgh Gate at Hyde Park (2010).

The 15m wide screen of steel and acrylic is based on the navigational charts used by Columbus, triggered by the name of the courtyard and the proximity of Greenwich. The optical glass eye shown here refracts a view to the north and is decorated with navigational motifs.
