One summertime activity you might find yourself indulging in this season is gardening. While not an exact science — because even experts make mistakes — beginners shouldn't be intimidated by this much loved hobby.

Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS FOR YOUR SOIL TYPE

Most plants normally thrive better in a certain soil type. Before you hit the garden centre check the soil where you plan to plant, is it light and sandy, or heavy and clay like?

2. GIVE YOUR PLANTS ENOUGH SPACE

Basically don't try to recreate a big display by packing plants close together. Placing young plants too close can lead to them dying, or needing extra care to keep them alive.

3. BE GENTLE

Removing new plants from their pots by pulling them can break or bruise them stem. Instead gently squeeze the pot sides and turn it upside-down, using your other hand to catch the plant as it slides out.

4. DON'T PLANT DRY ROOTS

Thoroughly soak the roots of a new plant before you put it in the soil.

5. GET RID OF WEEDS

Weed regularly and remove the roots — and remember to avoid putting weeds in the compost heap.

6. ADD MULCH

Apply a layer of mulch that's 2 to 3 inches deep around each plant. This will help reduce weeds by blocking out the sun, and retain moisture so you don't have to water as often.

7. CONSIDER CONTAINERS

Not matter what space you're working with, big or small consider containers. You can grow many plants in pots, including vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit trees, berries, and shrubs
