AEW has booked a big match for Dynamite's 5th-anniversary.
On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, AEW Dynamite will take place exactly five years from the date the first episode aired in 2019. In celebration of the milestone, the company has scheduled a match between long-time rivals, Will Ospreay and Ricochet, for the International Championship.
The match was first teased when the two had a backstage interaction at AEW All Out. Ospreay told Ricochet to get some wins on his record and then talk to Tony Khan about getting a shot at his title.
Ricochet picked up a win over The Beast Mortos on AEW Dynamite last night. He's now 3-0 in AEW singles matches, having also beaten Kyle Fletcher and Sammy Guevara recently.
Ricochet told Ospreay last night that he's picked up some wins, spoke to Tony Khan, and will be challenging for the title on October 2.
"I went and talked to Tony and I got myself a match. So, on October 2 at the five-year anniversary for AEW's Dynamite, you see I got myself a match. It's going to be Ricochet vs. Will Ospreay for your International Championship."
"You and I have had some matches that literally changed the landscape of professional wrestling and over these past couple of years, yeah, you've been on another level. But homie, I'm still Ricochet and I'm out of this world."
Ospreay also has a title match on next week's AEW Grand Slam show. He will team with his former United Empire stablemate Kyle Fletcher to challenge The Young Bucks for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
This will be the ninth singles match Ricochet and Ospreay have had against one another. Their first bout took place at a RevPro show in October 2013 but two of their most notable matches were in New Japan Pro Wrestling's Best of the Super Juniors tournaments in 2016 & 2017. They've also wrestled each other for EVOLVE, and WCPW, as well as at PWG's Battle of Los Angeles in 2016.
