Hello and Happy Monday! How was everyone's weekend? Joey was in Arizona for a bachelor party, so I was living that solo parent life and even though these two can be a handful (sometimes, literally!), I really love having them to myself. We hit up a local festival, did our Home Depot craft, went to a 2nd birthday party, walked to the Farmer's Market and did a lot of "racing" in the backyard 😂 I have also chosen to block out the memory of Lydia's 30-minute car ride scream on Friday 🥴
Our dear friend Gil passed away last month, and though it wasn't ideal, I had to bring Lydia with me. She did pretty good at the cemetery service and luncheon but she did not enjoy the car ride between and then did that thing where she fell asleep in the car two blocks from home and woke up screaming ten minutes after I transferred her to her crib 🙁
She rallied and we picked Dempsey up from school, then played outside until it was time to meet up with Auntie Lauren, Landon, Grandma Lori and Chad for live music, food trucks and balloon animals! The kids had so much fun and the band was pretty good, so it was a really great time. Dempsey was dancing all over 😂 We left around 7:30 and I had them in bed by 8:30, then did some quick clean up and got into bed myself. I was so tired! 😅
We all slept in on Saturday 😴 I woke the kids up at 7:30 and got them downstairs for breakfast. Lydia wanted to move her seat next to Dempsey's and I love sitting across from the both of them 🥺 I was going to take them to the park/library but Dempsey wanted to build our crafts from Home Depot (we picked up the kits when we were there last weekend), and I said why not?! He is soooo good and attentive with those, he barely needed my help! I built Lydia's while Dempsey painted his and Lydia painted herself 😂 They turned out so good and the kids luckily got baths right after. We got an accidental last minute invite to my friend's daughter's birthday party and when I floated the idea by Dempsey he seemed really into it, so while Lydia napped and Dempsey watched Bluey, I took a quick shower and then he helped me unload our grocery delivery... at the front door 😂 Everything he took out, he told me "this is the good stuff!"
Once Lydia was up, we packed up and headed to the birthday party. Dempsey was soooo nervous walking in and I basically had to push him through the house to get to the backyard. He asked me "what if I don't like anyone?" Poor buddy! But once he saw the ax throwing game, he opened right up and ended up having such a fun time! There was a piñata and he loved it (and the candy inside!). Lydia had a good time, walking around drinking a Capri Sun too 😂 I literally had to drag Dempsey out! Back at home, a later than usual dinner of spaghetti and meatballs. Joey FaceTimed us and got a kick out of Lydia's spaghetti face 😂 Got them cleaned up and into bed and even though Lydia cried a bunch when I left the room, she eventually laid down and they both slept through the night. I cleaned up dinner, folded laundry and went to bed.
I think our two late nights had caught up to us by Sunday because they were both so clingy and irritable that morning. They were a little better after breakfast. I loaded them into the stroller and walked to the Farmer's Market. First stop, popsicles! Second stop, coffee! Then we picked out some heirloom tomatoes and some apples before meeting up with Auntie Lauren and Landon, who'd just gotten his first haircut the day before and was looking so grown up 🥺 I could not convince my two to get back into the stroller, so they walked freely through the market and it was only semi-stressful for me because one of them is a runner, who won't hold my hand or listen when her name is called and the other one needs to touch everything and also not hold my hand 😅 By the time I got them back home, I was very hot and very overstimulated and it was somehow already lunch time?! Got them fed and Lydia down for her nap and then Dempsey got TV time while I made some burritos for lunch this week. I sat down next to him and read for a bit afterward.
When Dempsey stopped napping, we started just letting him watch TV in the afternoon because it was the only way he'd A) rest and B) let us rest. I follow moms on Instagram who seem very motivated to have their children play on their own in their rooms for a solid block of time but I've just never known how to do that and I'm sorry, but this is just not something I want to stress over, so this is how we do it. My sis came to visit us right when Lydia was getting up from her nap and it was so nice to see her. Dempsey put her right to work 😂 Then Joey came home! I got to hear about his weekend and tell him about ours, then I left him with the kids and went inside to make dinner and for a moment of glorious silence! I made margherita chicken and both kids gobbled it right up. I was so happy! Got them both to bed, realized the Emmys were on, decided we'd already missed most of the show and watched BB instead. Glad to have Joey home, glad to have scheduled a dinner with my mom and sis for tonight and glad for that sweet time with my babies this weekend 🤍
