Rey Fenix may not be able to join his brother Penta El Zero Miedo in WWE for some time.
Last week, multiple reports stated that The Lucha Bros had signed with WWE and we're expected to go directly to the main roster. However, both are still under contract with AEW and cannot legally negotiate with the company. On top of that, AEW can extend Fenix's contract for as long as one year due to the time he missed due to injury.
The situation was addressed by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio.
"They are under contract to AEW," Meltzer said of the brothers. "People were saying that Pentagon had signed with WWE and he can't sign with WWE. Technically, he is telling people that he has not talked to them. Of course, that's not true. In a sense, if he says he had, that's tampering, he's under contract to AEW."
However, Penta's AEW contract is about to expire and he is expected to sign with WWE shortly after it does. AEW could potentially release Fenix to allow him to leave at the same time as his brother, but as of this writing, they have not done that and it's not clear if they will or not.
"It's still up in the air with Tony Khan. I was told tonight that Rey Fenix has not been told that he's being released or going to be allowed to go and he's got about a year left due to injury time," Meltzer continued. "His contract itself is up the same time that Penta's would be but they can keep him for another year and I don't know what's going to happen."
Neither Penta nor Fenix has wrestled on AEW programming since July. The brothers are AEW originals and the fifth team in history to hold the company's tag titles, having won them from the Young Bucks at AEW All Out 2021. They also became the company's second-ever World Trios Champions in 2022.
