'Something makes boredom and hurt disappear…,' Rumi!
Once, German Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (February 22, 1788 - September 21, 1860) had said: "Life swings like a pendulum backward and forward between pain and boredom." Although quick relief from pain is not always possible, people try to get rid of boredom with the help of social media in the 21st Century. They devote themselves to smartphones, watching reels or shorts available on social media. Irrespective of the contents of these reels, a large number of people watch one video after another on a regular basis as a form of sublimation.
While books are not loved by everyone, art works do not attract all. Even sports and movies often fail to entertain people. However, the fear of boredom is deep in the heart of every human being. Hence, people think about bringing variety in their lives in an attempt to overcome boredom. In such a situation, the small screens of smartphones have become effective troubleshooters! One can effortlessly enter into a virtual life from the real life or vice versa with the continuous movements of her/his index finger.
The question arises here: Does watching these videos really help one to overcome boredom? Research on overuse of social media, and its impact on human mind and attention has been going on for a long time. As per a latest study carried out by researchers of a Canadian university, those who move from one video to another on social media or even drag it back and forth to find the interesting portion while watching a video cannot overcome their boredom. Their boredom increases, instead!
After carrying out studies on various age groups, researchers have found that the boredom of viewers increases while continuously swiping across multiple videos. The boredom also depends on the length of a reel. In fact, some switch to another video when they find it boring to watch one. Hence, watching reels helps one to pass time, but not to get rid of boredom.
The inherent tragedy of technological advancement is becoming more entangled in what one seeks to escape from. One cannot veritably be as engaged with time as s/he wants to be with the help of social media. It is in the relative free time, boredom seems to engulf the person.
According to researchers, people are becoming more monotonous in character, as well as in behaviour, than their predecessors nowadays. Researchers have claimed that people find it difficult to immerse themselves fully in one particular experience. They prefer to float on the surface, rather than delving deep. It can be said that the social media where people are looking for variety have slowly turned out to be limiting factors that cripple their minds, in a way!
