We took our annual road trip to Ulverston in late August and we found ourselves more than ready for it. 🙂
Haverthwaite station
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway can be found just up the road from the Lakeland Motor Museum, on the way back to Ulverston.
Visitors can travel aboard traditional 1950s carriages, which are pulled by a steam engine through the countryside scenery of the Leven Valley, a fantastic leisurely way to transport passengers between Haverthwaite and Lakeside stations.
The journey takes around 30 minutes, with a small stop at Newby Bridge Halt. Many passengers leave the train at Lakeside in order to take the ferry up to Bowness and Windermere but, like us, you can choose to remain on board for the return journey.

The Railway Children
There's plenty of space for train spotting at Haverthwaite station, alongside a tea room, a picnic area and an adventure playground for younger visitors. Dogs are welcome and can travel on the train for free. 🙂
