To hit a wall at maximum capacity against an immovable retaining wall is what it feels like to be a human in 2024. To be the best in anything is a such an impermanent reality that permeates throughout even the greatest of athletes, innovators, and leaders. As a writer, thinker, philosopher, tradesman, father, husband, and creative, I know that there are far better than I can even imagine. How do I deal with mediocrity?
I deal with this hard crusted truth by the grit of industrial grade Christian theology that I am as good as I already need to be. No good will prove my worthiness of what God has already created. The highest esteemed virologist will bow his head to the typical cardiac surgeon. The heart surgeon is no fly on the wall but he is nonetheless a petty salary wage worker at the end of the day. Who he saves though could perhaps become the next sitting president. For we do not know the impact we can drill into the unknown future. We are given a set of tools and instructions that impress the blueprints to the legacy that we will never even partially comprehend the extent to which the end result will accumulate.
To this we procreate, we work, and we try. We create via God's blueprint that we simply define as a genetic code. We work with the job that hires us and we buy the goods the shelves allow us to buy. We articulate this potential good with the story we further write into the next generation. Good parents hate themselves over the little things that soon become forgotten memories or memories not worth keeping for the many. Bad parents obsess about the big things they believe are the reason for their child's greatness that often times proves to be their greatest downfall. Human's are funny in this way. Our most prized possessions are often sacrificed for a way of life that is not ideal at all. Our most prized memories are never remembered by those we did it for. Our most hated moments are a faded dream to those who were witnesses to the silly happenstance.
The anxieties of the world are out of our control while the reason for a good night sleep is a choice we make. We haunt our own day dreams and allow the darkest of nightmares into our homes. So, Breathe. Most of the things don't matter. Most of the thoughts don't either. When we realize there will always be greater at some point, we open the door to be present. This presence is the enlightened moment in which we actually do matter. The power of each moment is an angelic realm in which we also do not have control over. So we breathe. In and out with our children, with our loved ones, with the strangers whose anchor was dropped on our peace and tranquility.
Shine the light on those in the dark. Let their dilated eyes quiver against the angelic light we brought to rescue their soul. For the time and truth is not for the moment to assure but the resonance and impact is a timeless reality that no man can understand in the moment. So go on, do wrong but don't forget to repent. Do bad but also forgive for the bad done. Close your eyes but open them when it is time to do so.
We will never be perfect. We will never be the best. We will never know how important we are. That is not our job. Our job is to do it. Our job is put on the armor that will forever protect us from not believing in the light we have been gifted. No matter the wattage or the hertz, we will let our light shine. In time, our capacity will grow so long as we stay grounded. Let the electrical power we wield find its way home in the way it finds most fitting. Humble yourself for are future dirt. Hold your chest high for you are a shimmering light amidst the darkest of swales. Let the feeling of life run through your veins so that you may continue this purpose that God has entrusted you with. Our time is limited and our abilities are imperfect. This imperfection is the beauty that defines your uniqueness to the world. Let the judgement of others not be the outcome in which you see yourself by. The world is vast and your heart is endless so long as you allow God to shine through. Let God be the crux in which you lay down your arms and lift up your head. This alignment will lead you to true greatness. The kind of greatness that is ultimately kind and gracious, light and timeless. Thank God for this life you have been gifted and let the anxieties of the world piss away behind the smokescreen of the present tense. Just keep swimming.
