He is single and he likes to remain so. However, he has more than 100 biological children in 12 countries! Pavel Valeryevich Durov, the 39-year-old Russian-born Emirati entrepreneur who is known for founding the social networking site VK and the Telegram Messenger app, recently revealed this secret of his life.
In one of his social media posts, Durov claimed that he had started donating his sperm 15 years ago at the request of a friend! He also mentioned that the wife of his friend could not conceive a child due to some issues. Hence, they requested Durov to donate sperm at a clinic. Although he hesitated to accept the request initially, the Telegram CEO came to know that the quality of his sperm was quite good after visiting the clinic! So, he returned to that Sperm Donation Clinic even after helping his friend to become a father. In his Telegram post, Durov wrote: "Fifteen years ago, a friend of mine approached me with a weird request. He said that he and his wife couldn't have kids due to a fertility issue and asked me to donate sperm at a clinic for them to have a baby. I laughed my ass off before realising he was dead serious." Later, Durov became a sperm donor as he donated his sperm on numerous occasions. However, he is no longer associated with sperm donation and also has no contact with that clinic for a long time.
A few days ago, the clinic informed Durov that he is now the biological father of hundreds of children in 12 countries! He has also been informed that the IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) clinic still has his frozen sperm! As the clinic does not reveal the identity of any donor, users of his sperm have no idea that Durov is the biological father of their children. Meanwhile, Durov wants the clinic to reveal the DNA identity of his sperm in near future in order to allow his biological children to find each other more easily.
Durov is of the opinion that healthy men, with quality sperm, should donate sperm. He claimed that many childless families would benefit from this in the future! On social media, he mentioned: "Of course, there are risks, but I don't regret having been a donor. The shortage of healthy sperm has become an increasingly serious issue worldwide, and I'm proud that I did my part to help alleviate it." Durov also wrote: "This sounded crazy enough to get me to sign up for sperm donation. Fast forward to 2024, my past donating activity has helped over a hundred couples in 12 countries to have kids. Moreover, many years after I stopped being a donor, at least one IVF clinic still has my frozen sperm available for anonymous use by families who want to have kids."
As expected, Durov's social media post has taken the Internet by storm, with people discussing the sensitive issue of sperm donation! One social media user said: "Tech CEOs' new hubristic hobby seems to be competing on the number of offspring they can claim - without ever loving them or being in their lives." Another stressed: "The funniest part is that there are still some of his sperm donations left and preserved in one of the facilities." A third one added: "This is what happens when you 'donate' your sperm to IVF clinics. I don't see how this can be spun as a win."
Interestingly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, reacting to an X post that shared the screenshot of Durov's post, wrote: "Rookie numbers lmao - Genghis Khan." It may be noted that Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol Empire, is known to have fathered many children. A research paper published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, titled 'The Genetic Legacy of the Mongols', claimed that 0.5% of the global male population were Khan's genetic descendants!
