At the Library : Ricky

Welcome to my Melville library today, and the kids are celebrating Rock Day.

The original, best-selling "Rock" book keeps on rolling, now celebrating its 5th anniversary!

This modern-day classic follows 14 lovable rocks (and one wise little ladybug) on a heartwarming and hilarious journey, universally loved by children, parents and teachers alike.

From zippy little pebbles to big strong boulders, the rock friends get together to play and roll around their favorite hill, only to find that one of their friends, Ricky, can't roll with them. Unlike all of the other rocks, who are all round, Ricky can't roll because he's flat on one side.

Determined not to leave their friend behind, the rocks set out to help Ricky roll - one way or another.

When the last knot was tied, and the work was all done,
the only step left was for Rick to have fun.
They stood back and watched, feeling nervous and tense,
as Rick breathed in deep, with increasing suspense.

He moved slowly at first, testing out his new mold,
and then, for the first time...Ricky the rock rolled!

This sweet, imaginative picture book, written in verse, brings a fresh set of characters to life in a story that highlights perseverance and triumph in the face of adversity, and the power of true friendship, combining the spirit of The Giving Tree with the rhyme and rhythm of Dr. Seuss.

Targeted for children ages 3-11, this is the first of a series of books featuring the "You Rock Group" that kids are sure to cherish as they grow, and learn from through empowering, motivating and fun-to-read stories.

Kids ages: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

Teaching Inclusivity, Compassion, and Friendship!

This book is such a delight. We've owned it for three days, and we've read it about 18 times. It's a light hearted, fun read, yet provided me the opportunity to discuss a heavy, yet very necessary, conversation with my son. The rocks in the story all have charming personalities that helped bridge a lesson in the power of inclusivity, compassion, and friendship. Ricky is different, and rather than being sidelined, his friends band together to help him experience life in a similar way. Children can be told to be kind. You can model kind behavior. But a book that helps birth a conversation and provides an opening to discuss sample scenarios helps give kids the proper tools to handle real life situations. I highly recommend adding it to your child's library!

Thanks for joining us each Saturday for children's book time. Lisa
