Off to Memphis ! I wanted to go to the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks walking through the Lobby. Yes, this is a thing. Apparently in the 1930's, Manager Frank Schutt decided to, as a joke, put live ducks in the fountain in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel. People loved it and thus began the tradition. In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke offered to help with the ducks and taught them the Duck March. He was the Duckmaster for 50 years until his retirement in 1991. The ducks walk through at 11 a.m. every morning on their red carpet and then jump in the fountain. They live on the roof (penthouse?) and are very well cared for. The photo above is after the walk ended and I had a photo taken with the most recent Duckmaster. He was an awesome guy and a terrific personality. I don't have photos of the ducks walking the carpet as I was taking all videos. Link to one of the videos here.
We also went downtown to Beale Street, not what we thought it would be like. We were there very late afternoon and there was hardly anyone on the street and a lot of businesses were closed or closed up. I think I romanticized Memphis, you know the the Blues, Elvis, bars, fun times.....it was a little disappointing to be honest. Maybe we were there too early, I think it was 4-6 pm we were there; I can't stay up past 9:30 but maybe later was the time to go ! lol We spent some time at a General Store called A. Schwab. It was pretty interesting then we ended up at BB King's bar on the corner to listen to music and have a bite to eat. I loved the band that played that day, don't remember their name.
One other thing we did was head to Graceland to Elvis's house. We were there almost 4 hours and we had to reserve tickets for 9 a.m. to go; $80 each to go through. There was the mansion, all the exhibits, his plane, his cars, stores and restaurants. Did I mention when were were down there it was between 40-45 Celsius? If you are American, let's just say it was stinkin' hot and then some.
