With Back to School just around the corner, it's time to get all the supplies ready. Even better, go one step further to personalize them with the help of a Janome Embroidery machine!
Embroidery is not limited to clothes or regular fabrics. With the proper stabilizer, design, and technique, you can embroider on a lot of different items. For example, you can take a very basic pencil case, which you sew or purchase and personalize it with embroidery.
I bought a plain black pencil case, which is very functional, but lacked details. I decided to add a simple name to make it more unique and identifiable.
I used the FREE Janome AcuEdit app which works with my Janome Skyline S9's wireless capabilities. I chose a font and size for the name from the different options available in my machine and in the app.
The pencil case was not big and the small Free-Arm FA10a 3.9 x 1.6" hoop included with the Janome Skyline S9 was the perfect size. I couldn't hoop the pencil case, however, it wasn't big enough. Even if it were, with this stiff fabric, the hoop would have left marks which could be difficult, or impossible to remove afterward.
Instead of hooping the pencil case, I used some sticky stabilizer in the hoop to be able to float the pencil case on top. Once the stabilizer is hooped properly, you can remove the protective layer with small snips, or score it with a needle or pin to expose the sticky part.
I marked where I wanted the name to be on the pencil case, and placed it carefully on the sticky stabilizer lining up the marks to make sure the name will be stitched straight.
One very nice feature of the Janome Skyline S9 is its wireless capability. From the app on my iPad, I was able to send the design directly to the machine without the need to use a USB stick or the direct connect cable included with the machine.
I attached the hoop and pressed the Start button to begin the embroidery. Since the pencil case is only fixed with the sticky stabilizer, I carefully used my fingers to make sure it didn't move at the beginning. I didn't want to use the basting feature of the machine as it will have left holes in the pencils case once removed.
Once the stitching was finished, I removed the hoop from the machine, then removed the pencil case from the sticky stabilizer in the hoop.
I cut around the stabilizer and cut all the small jump stitches and small threads from the name.
And, just like that, my pencil case was done and ready to use!
The possibilities of a Janome Embroidery machine are endless and especially helpful for the Back to School season, or any type of season, lol!
